Liverpool signs Bradley Barcola from PSG for £123 million, the most expensive transfer of the European summer

Almost two million pounds for every one of his 23 years. That was the blunt message Liverpool sent on Monday by closing the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for roughly £123 million (about $166 million). It's not just any figure: it's the most expensive transfer of the entire summer in European soccer.

The Anfield club had been chasing the French winger for months and finally got its way. Barcola arrives as a two-time Champions League winner with PSG, having lifted the trophy in each of the last two seasons, though last season he had to settle for a secondary role, coming off the bench behind Désiré Doué. At Liverpool, by contrast, he's expected to be a starter from day one.

The deal is structured as £106 million (about $143 million) guaranteed, plus up to £17 million ($23 million) in performance-based add-ons. For perspective on the leap in value: Barcola himself had joined PSG from Lyon in 2023 for just 45 million euros ($38.5 million). In three years, his value multiplied more than fourfold.

With this addition, Liverpool has finished assembling a very expensive attack. Barcola joins Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, signed last summer for £125 million ($170 million) and £116 million ($156 million) respectively. Three players, more than £350 million invested in under twelve months on the forward line alone.

Still, it's worth not mistaking this for a simple replacement for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian, who left Anfield after nine trophy-laden years to join Trabzonspor, played on the right. Barcola is a natural left-footer: a pure left winger, the kind who hugs the touchline to take defenders on.

A gap to fill on the left

Barcola joins a team that started the Premier League season on the wrong foot: two last-gasp draws, against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, in the first two matchdays. Until now, Cody Gakpo and fellow newcomer Víctor Muñoz had shared that left flank. Gakpo, in fact, has been mentioned in the closing hours of the market as a possible departure to Manchester City.

At PSG, meanwhile, the absence is being felt. The club also opened its Ligue 1 campaign with two draws, and without Barcola's speed and dribbling threat, it's had a harder time unbalancing opponents. Luis Enrique still has Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Doué out wide, and reinforced the squad with Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres and Mika Godts, but the void left by such a direct player won't be filled overnight.

The Paris club itself said goodbye with warm words: "Through his talent and the emotions he gave the fans, Bradley will remain in the hearts of Parisians," PSG said in its statement, adding that Barcola helped "write one of the most beautiful pages in the history" of the club.

His time in Paris leaves behind numbers that back up that farewell: 152 appearances, 39 goals and 37 assists, along with two Champions Leagues, three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France trophies, two UEFA Super Cups and an Intercontinental Cup, all in just three seasons.

The move also sets another striking mark: it's the most expensive transfer in history for a player leaving French soccer, surpassing any previous sale by PSG or any other club in the country.

In the ranking of the Premier League's summer market, Barcola sits above other big-money moves as well: Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa to Chelsea, $156 million), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest to Manchester City, $155 million) and Sandro Tonali (Newcastle to Tottenham, $133 million). The European market closes Tuesday night, so there's still room for a last-minute surprise, though it will be hard for anyone to top this figure.
