Lyon strikes early and survives Anderlecht comeback bid to win 1-2 in Europa League

It took just seven minutes for Lyon to strike first at Lotto Park. Noah Nartey finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1, and before the half hour mark it was already 0-2: Keito Nakamura, assisted by Mohamed Ouedraogo, fired a shot that found the top left corner in the 21st minute. Anderlecht pulled one back in the second half with a header from Mihajlo Cvetkovic in the 60th minute, off a cross from Ali Maamar, but it wasn't enough. The final score stood at 1-2 in Lyon's favor, in a clash from the Europa League.

The home side came out on top in the first-half chance count, with efforts from Marten Winkler and Enric Llansana that failed to find the target, but Anderlecht couldn't turn that pressure into a goal before the break. Lyon, on the other hand, made the most of two of its few clear transitions to head into the locker room with a two-goal lead that looked solid.

A comeback bid that fell short

The second half brought a change of pace. Anderlecht pushed forward with Thelo Aasgaard, Ludwig Augustinsson and a Cvetkovic who had already been testing his luck in the first half, and found reward in the 60th minute with that header that brought hope back to the home crowd. Lyon, for its part, didn't fall behind in the response department: Loïs Openda had as many as three attempts between the first and second halves that were denied by Colin Coosemans or by the run of play itself, and Corentin Tolisso, well into the second half, also tried a header without luck. Anderlecht's push showed in the corner count and in the late chances, with Danylo Sikan and Andrew Omobamidele generating danger in the final minutes, but the visitors' goal held firm and the score didn't change again.

Anderlecht controlled the ball and created more clear chances, but Lyon was far sharper in front of goal: it put ten of its thirteen shots on target, nearly double the home side's rate on that metric. According to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Anderlecht generated 2.02 expected goals against 1.37 for Lyon, a number that reflects the home side's offensive volume in the second half, even though the scoreline went the other way.
