Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70 Million
The 22-year-old Cameroonian midfielder becomes United's third midfield addition in a matter of weeks following Ugarte's injury.
Seventy million pounds (roughly $95 million) is the figure Manchester United put on the table to land a 22-year-old midfielder who, until just days ago, was turning out for Brighton. The name is Carlos Baleba, a Cameroon international, and his move was confirmed this Tuesday as the most expensive piece in a midfield overhaul the club has been carrying out for weeks now.
Baleba signed a five-year contract, with the option of a sixth. The exact financial terms weren't disclosed by either party, though British outlets agree the deal sits around £65 million in guaranteed fees plus £5 million in add-ons tied to performance targets.
To understand why United moved with such urgency in this position, you have to look at the summer the club has had. Casemiro departed, an exit that left an obvious gap in experience and bite in midfield. As if that weren't enough, Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury that ruled him out right when the team needed reliable options in that area. It's no coincidence that before landing Baleba, United had already brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Three reinforcements in the same area of the pitch within a matter of weeks make clear what Michael Carrick's priority was this transfer window.
So what exactly does Baleba bring? Last season's Premier League numbers back up the investment: across 31 appearances for Brighton, he ranked in the top 8% of the league for combined tackles and interceptions, and in the top 1% for second balls won. Those are the kinds of numbers that point to a player with sharp defensive instincts and the ability to win the ball back in contested areas, exactly the profile a United side in need of solidity over style was missing.
The player himself didn't hide his excitement once the transfer became official.
It's an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the chance to do it as a Manchester United player will be a true honor.Carlos Baleba
The club's sporting leadership also had praise for the new signing. United's football director, Jason Wilcox, described him in these terms:
Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to keep developing. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will complement our squad really well.Jason Wilcox
Baleba's arrival also comes at an uncomfortable moment for United. This past weekend, on the opening matchday of the Premier League season, the team suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull. That result piles even more pressure on the reshaped midfield and makes the Cameroonian a player who will need to adapt quickly if he's going to help get the season back on track right away.
