Manchester United rout Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford for first Champions League win

The home side put the match away in the first half, scoring three goals before the break in the league phase of the European competition.

Manchester United rout Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford for first Champions League win

Manchester United wasted no time at Old Trafford: it took just 26 minutes to get in front against Sabah, and from there the match turned into a formality that ended 4-0. Four goals in under an hour, three of them before halftime, made it clear early on that the gap in quality was going to show.

The match was part of the Champions League league phase, and United settled it with a near flawless first half. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the 26th minute off a cross from Patrick Dorgu, heading home from close range. Not even fifteen minutes later, Bruno Fernandes made it 2-0, finishing from the center of the box after being set up by Youri Tielemans. And before referee Willy Delajod blew the whistle for halftime, Benjamin Sesko stretched the lead in the 44th minute with a left footed finish off a through ball from Bryan Mbeumo. Three goals in twenty minutes, and the game was effectively over before the teams even reached the locker room.

The second half slowed down, as often happens once the result is all but decided, but United found a fourth goal in the 67th minute: Lisandro Martinez pounced on a rebound from a free kick worked by his teammates to make it a final 4-0. Sabah had a couple of half chances late on, including a shot from Orphe Mbina that crashed off the crossbar in stoppage time, but they were never close to getting on the scoresheet.

A dominance the numbers back up

The match stats reflect what was seen on the field: United controlled possession, created more clear cut chances and were far sharper going forward into the opposing box.

According to our xG model built from the shots taken in the match, United generated 3.66 expected goals against 1.11 for Sabah, a gap that lines up with the final score and with the volume of clear chances the home side had over the 90 minutes.

Before kickoff we had projected a 59% chance of a home win, a 22% chance of a draw and a 19% chance of a Sabah win, with expected goals of 2.17 for United and 1.17 for Sabah. The result went beyond that projection: United didn't just win, they did so with more authority than expected, scoring double the projected total and giving their opponent no chance to respond.

What it means in the standings

With this win, Manchester United picks up its first victory of the league phase and sits on 3 points, in fourth place in the table, though it's worth noting this is only the first match played by most teams, so the standings don't say much yet. Sabah, for their part, remain pointless after this opening matchday. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 3 points, though on the field the distance felt far greater.

For United, the match brought forward names that delivered when called upon: Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Sesko up front, plus an unexpected contribution from the back with Lisandro Martinez's goal. For Sabah, the takeaway is a different one: a clearly superior opponent ran through them in the first half and they never found a way to stem the flow of United chances, who even had room to rotate, bringing on Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee and Andrey Santos without losing any momentum.
