Marseille opens Ligue 1 campaign with a rout of Strasbourg
Gouiri scored twice as Marseille cruised to a lopsided win over a Strasbourg side reduced to ten men in the second half.

Marseille kicked off its Ligue 1 campaign with a resounding rout of Strasbourg, winning 4-0 at the Orange Vélodrome behind a brace from Amine Gouiri and late goals from Keyliane Abdallah and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. The home side controlled the match from start to finish, though it had to wait until first-half stoppage time to break the deadlock, and things only got tougher for Strasbourg after a red card left the visitors down to ten men for more than half an hour.
A dominant display that took time to show on the scoreboard
Through the first 45 minutes, Marseille created clear chances through Angel Gomes, Igor Paixão and Gouiri himself without finding the net. Strasbourg held firm and even threatened with shots from Diogo Sousa and Gessime Yassine, though neither seriously tested the home goalkeeper. The visitors' resistance finally cracked right before halftime: in the 45th minute, Gouiri struck a left-footed shot from the center of the box, set up by Angel Gomes, to make it 1-0 at the break.
The second half shifted quickly. In the 57th minute, the referee showed a red card to Samir El Mourabet, but VAR stepped in immediately to overturn it. The review didn't save the Strasbourg defender for long, though: a minute later, in the 58th, El Mourabet was sent off again, this time for fighting, leaving his side with ten men. With the game already turning against the visitors, the referee pointed to the penalty spot in the 64th minute after a VAR review for a foul by Guéla Doué on Igor Paixão inside the area. Gouiri made no mistake from the spot in the 67th minute to make it 2-0, his second goal of the night.
With the result all but decided, Marseille kept pushing and extended the lead in stoppage time. Keyliane Abdallah, who had come on from the bench, scored in the 88th minute to make it 3-0 with a left-footed strike from inside the box. Then, in the 95th minute, Højbjerg sealed the rout with a shot from outside the area for the final 4-0.
The numbers behind a complete domination
The stats confirm Marseille's superiority across the full 90 minutes, an edge that only grew once Strasbourg went down to ten men in the second half.
| Stat | Marseille | Strasbourg |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 66.7 | 33.3 |
| Shots | 14 | 5 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 2 |
| Corners | 3 | 4 |
| Passes | 683 | 335 |
| Fouls committed | 6 | 12 |
According to our post-match xG estimate based on the shots taken in the game, Marseille generated 1.968 expected goals compared to just 0.435 for Strasbourg, a gap that clearly reflects the control the home side exerted over the match.
A projection that fell short
Before kickoff, our model had given Marseille a 51% chance of winning, with a 24% chance of a draw and a 25% chance of a Strasbourg win, with expected goals of 2.03 for the home side and 1.41 for the visitors. The final result blew past those projections: Marseille not only won but did so by a four-goal margin, helped along by the red card that left the visitors a man down for a large stretch of the second half.
What the result means
With this win, Marseille opened the season atop the table, with 3 points from its first match and a goal difference of plus-4. Strasbourg, meanwhile, came away empty-handed with a minus-4 goal difference in its opener. The three-point gap between the two sides already reflects a real distance, one built on the efficiency of Gouiri, who scored twice, and the defensive solidity Marseille showed once the sending-off tilted the match in its favor.
