Mastantuono's Hat Trick Powers Fiorentina Past Venezia in 4-2 Rout

The visitors were ruthless on the counterattack despite seeing far less of the ball, while Venezia failed to turn its dominance of possession into goals.

Mastantuono's Hat Trick Powers Fiorentina Past Venezia in 4-2 Rout

Venezia dreamed for eight minutes of pulling off an upset. Akor Adams put the hosts up 1-0 in the 21st minute, finishing off a counterattack set up by Gianluca Busio, and the Pier Luigi Penzo erupted. But Franco Mastantuono snuffed out the celebration almost immediately: first he leveled the score in the 28th minute with a strike from outside the box, and just a minute later, in the 29th, he had already put Fiorentina ahead. In barely sixty seconds, the match changed hands. Fiorentina went on to win 4-2 in a stadium that started out hopeful and ended up watching the visitors walk away with all three points after an offensive clinic.

Mastantuono wasn't done at two goals. Late in the match, in the 83rd minute, he struck again, this time heading home from close range to complete a hat trick that summed up Fiorentina's afternoon. Before that, in the 65th minute, Mateo Pellegrino had made it 3-1 on another counterattack, this one set up by Nicolò Fagioli. Venezia still had a moment of pride in the 85th minute, when Antoine Hainaut, off a cross from Ridgeciano Haps, made it 4-2, the final score. It wasn't enough to do anything but soften the blow.

A Fiorentina team that struck at will on the counter

The curious thing is that Venezia controlled much of the ball, finishing with 62.6% possession to Fiorentina's 37.4%. But possession wasn't the visitors' problem, it was the cutting edge they showed every time they won the ball back. The numbers make it clear:

StatisticVeneziaFiorentina

Big chances25

Fouls committed116

With nearly double the shots and more than triple the shots on target, Fiorentina made the most of the little it touched. The xG estimate calculated from the match's shots reflects that gap sharply: 3.29 expected goals for Fiorentina against just 0.99 for Venezia. The visitors converted nearly every clear chance into a goal, while the hosts, despite holding the ball, never found the depth needed to threaten beyond their two goals.

Far from what the preview suggested

Before the match, our projection split the odds evenly: 35% for a Venezia win, 28% for a draw and 37% for a Fiorentina win, with an expected total of 2.92 goals (1.43 for the hosts and 1.48 for the visitors). The final scoreline, with six goals total and a three-goal margin, blew well past that forecast of a tight match. Fiorentina didn't just win within the range that made it the favorite, it did so with a decisiveness the model never saw coming.

What the result means in the standings

In Serie A, the result makes things worse for both sides. Venezia is now without a win in four straight matches, while Fiorentina, with this victory, snaps a poor run that had left it with just one win in its opening fixtures. Even so, both teams' overall goal difference remains the worst in the league table, at -7 for Venezia and -6 for Fiorentina, a reflection of just how rough the start to the season has been for both clubs.

For Venezia, the match leaves the sense that controlling the ball isn't enough if it doesn't translate into clear chances. For Fiorentina, though, the night at the Pier Luigi Penzo could be the first sign that the scoring touch it had been missing is starting to show up, and from the player who least expected to carry that weight.
