Matchday 10 of the Apertura 2026 produces the highest-scoring round of the tournament

Nine matches produced 35 goals, with three games ending 6-6 in combined scoring, before Liga MX pauses for the FIFA date.

Nine matches, thirty five goals and not a single dull draw. That's how Liga MX wrapped up its schedule before the FIFA break, with a Matchday 10 of the Apertura 2026 that will go down as the most prolific round of the tournament so far.

Nothing like this had been seen in this edition of the league: it's the first time the tournament has topped the thirty goal mark in a single matchday, and what makes it stand out is that it happened on a weekend without the usual interruption from national team call ups. Every top level player was available for his club, and the result showed on the scoreboard.

What was the theme of the weekend? Matches with five or more goals. No lockdowns, no caution: three of the nine matchups finished with exactly six combined goals. That was the case in Atlante 4-2 Rayados, in the thrilling Cruz Azul 3-3 Toluca and in the offensive showcase of Necaxa 2-4 America. Add to those two more matches with five goals apiece: Tijuana 2-3 Atlas, played at the border, and Pumas 2-3 Atletico San Luis, at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario. Those five matches alone produced 28 goals, nearly 80 percent of the round's total output.

Not everything was a goal fest, of course. There were exceptions that confirmed soccer can also be stingy when it wants to be. Both Santos 1-0 Pachuca and Tigres 1-0 Puebla were settled by the slimmest of margins, with just one goal in each game. Rounding out the matchday were Chivas 0-2 Queretaro and Leon 2-1 FC Juarez, results that chipped in their share of goals without coming close to the feast seen in the other matches.

A tournament that was already goal heavy

Before this round, the scoring record for the Apertura 2026 belonged to the opening matchday, when every one of the nine games played also featured at least one goal, though the tally stopped at 29 goals. Matchday 10 not only matched that trend of goals spread across every match, it clearly surpassed it, tallying six more goals in total.

What stands out is that this offensive explosion happened even with several teams missing their main playmakers and top scorers, something that in theory should have cooled the attack down a bit. Instead, the weekend ended with more celebrations than at any other point in the tournament so far.

Liga MX now takes a breather for the FIFA window, but it leaves a question on the table that's starting to circulate among fans: can the tournament keep up this scoring pace when play resumes?
