Elbow Injury Rules Gabriel Maureira Out of South American Games with Chile U20
The 19-year-old Colo Colo goalkeeper suffered a bone issue that pulled him from the squad for the match against Deportes Concepcion and sidelined him from the Chilean national team.

A problem that surfaced in the middle of training changed the plans for more than one person. Gabriel Maureira, the 19-year-old goalkeeper who had been emerging as one of Colo Colo's brightest young prospects, felt pain in his right elbow, and that put an end, at least for now, to his hopes of wearing the Chilean national team jersey in an international tournament.
Radio ADN broke the news this Saturday: it's a bone related issue in the right elbow, the kind of thing that immediately sets off alarms for any medical staff. And that's exactly what happened. The coaching staff led by Fernando Ortiz didn't want to take any chances and automatically withdrew him from Sunday's match against Deportes Concepcion, part of matchday 23 of the Liga de Primera, a game in which he wasn't even set to start but was expected to be on the bench.
The tougher blow, though, comes from another direction. The injury closes the door on Maureira's participation in the South American Games (ODESUR), set to be held in Argentina with Chile's U20 national team. The ANFP confirmed the goalkeeper's withdrawal, and he will now be left off the roster representing the country in that category. For a young goalkeeper, losing the chance to log international minutes with the national team stings, though the priority now is recovery.
Vozinha Gets the Green Light in Goal
Maureira's absence reshuffles things between the posts in Macul. With the young goalkeeper sidelined, Cape Verdean goalkeeper Vozinha becomes the clear first choice, with virtually no internal competition to remain the starter for Colo Colo for the rest of the season.
That's no small detail for Colo Colo, who head into matchday 23 needing to protect the comfortable lead they hold atop the Liga de Primera. The goal is simple: don't let up defensively right when the team needs to keep collecting points to hold onto first place.
It remains to be seen how Maureira's elbow progresses in the coming days and whether the injury turns out to be a minor setback or requires longer treatment. For now, the goalkeeper will have to watch from the sidelines, both his team's push in the domestic league and Chile's run at the tournament in Argentina.
