Manchester United and 15 Year Old Wonderkid JJ Gabriel at War Over His First Contract

He's 15 years old, can't legally sign a professional contract yet, and he's already at the center of one of Manchester United's most eye catching soap operas. JJ Gabriel, the academy gem who made his first team debut in preseason against Atletico Madrid, has gone weeks without setting foot in training after walking out just before the Carabao Cup clash against Brighton on September 16.

The dispute, according to sources consulted by ESPN, stems from something very specific: the forward's representatives demanded that United guarantee him playing time before sitting down to negotiate his first scholarship contract. Nothing less than 20 minutes of action across three separate matches: against Sabah FK, against Brighton, and during Bournemouth's visit to Old Trafford on October 25. Only if that condition is met, sources say, would his camp be willing to open talks about his future.

Gabriel turns 16 this Tuesday, a date that matters because from that day on he would be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with the club. But the reality is that the relationship has broken down. He does appear in United's official squad photo released this Monday, though that image was actually taken nearly a month ago and, according to the material reviewed, little has changed since then in terms of reconciliation.

What's striking is that United had already made significant concessions. The club handed him the number 77 shirt for this season and worked with the Premier League to let him wear "Gabriel JR" on the back of his jersey. Even so, people close to the player maintain that certain promises from the club went unfulfilled, which would explain much of the current frustration.

A Club Still Determined to Keep Him

Despite everything, Old Trafford remains convinced that United is the best place for Gabriel to develop as a footballer. The club says it has assigned coaches and specialized staff, the kind who normally work only with first team players, to prepare him for the demands of the professional game. And when the forward skipped a full week of preseason training with the academy before his call up to the first team, the club chose not to discipline him, understanding that the decision probably wasn't his alone.

That, in fact, is seen by many inside the club as the root of the problem: there's an internal sense that Gabriel's camp, including members of his own family, is more interested in him breaking precociousness records than in prioritizing his long term development. And there's genuine concern, according to the material reviewed, about whether the player himself actually has a say in decisions that are shaping his career.

United has already made clear that if any evidence emerges of another club approaching Gabriel outside the rules governing these situations, it is prepared to take legal action. So far it has received no formal inquiries, though names like Barcelona and Real Madrid are already being linked to his future. In the meantime, the club insists it has put the young player's wellbeing above everything else, making several attempts to reach out and check on him since he stopped showing up for training.
