Mauricio Pinilla slams Fernando Gago for promising a title to Universidad de Chile fans

Thirteen points. That's the gap separating Universidad de Chile from league leaders Colo Colo in the Liga de Primera, and that number is exactly what sparked this week's controversy. While Fernando Gago keeps insisting there's still a mathematical chance to fight for the title, Mauricio Pinilla came out and said, flatly, that this amounts to not being realistic with the fans.

It all started at a press conference held by Gago himself, where the Argentine coach made his position clear. The Chile boss was blunt about it:

The comment quickly reached Pinilla, who now works as a commentator for ESPN F360 and didn't hold back. For the former forward, long identified with the blue jersey, the issue isn't the coach's ambition but the message it sends to supporters. "It's not about being critical, it's about not being foolish or deceiving people. Winning every game doesn't guarantee you anything. The rival has to lose six games and they haven't lost one all year," he fired back.

Praise with caveats

Pinilla went further and put a name to what he believes should be the club's real objective: securing the Chile 2 spot, the berth that grants access to the early rounds of the Copa Libertadores. "The reality is that the U needs to fight for Chile 2. His comments are a bit off, but I really like him as a coach and I hope he stays next year. But I don't like that he's misleading the fans, we're not fools," said the former Chile national team striker.

Mind you, the criticism didn't come alone. Pinilla himself made sure to soften his stance by acknowledging Gago's work at the helm of the team. "The U has clearly improved, I love Gago and what he's achieved," he admitted, though he was honest about this season's limitations: "This year we weren't on equal footing to fight for the title."

And next year? That's where Pinilla turned more optimistic than critical. Wrapping up his comments, he projected a competitive U squad heading into next season: "We're going to fight for Chile 2, we're going to have a good Libertadores run, prepare well for next year and fight for the championship next year on equal terms. Next year, I can assure you, the U will be in the title fight," he concluded.

With Colo Colo firmly established as the outright leader and a points gap that looks nearly impossible to close at this stage of the tournament, the debate Pinilla has stirred up points to a deeper question: how healthy is it to keep pushing a title narrative when the numbers say otherwise, and whether it wouldn't be better, as the former player himself suggests, to focus that energy on locking down the goal that's actually within reach.
