Mbappé returns to Real Madrid chasing his Champions League obsession: 15 goals, no trophy

Fifteen goals in eleven matches. Top scorer of the Champions League. And still, once again, no trophy to show for it. That's the contradiction that has followed Kylian Mbappé for years now, and it's back on the table just as a new season kicks off, with a new coach and the same obsession as always.

The forward returned to Madrid right after a World Cup in which he was, once again, on a different level. He finished as top scorer of the 2026 World Cup, took home the Golden Boot for the second time, and kept piling up records that are starting to become hard to track. But France fell short before the final, and that sting comes through in how he now talks about the one title he still doesn't have: the Champions League.

Because that's the detail that stands out most: last season he was the tournament's top scorer with those 15 goals in 11 matches, ahead of names like Harry Kane and Julián Álvarez. Braces against Marseille, Monaco and Benfica, a hat trick against Kairat, four goals against Olympiacos. A near perfect group stage. And yet, once again, the team fell short before the final. European soccer keeps reminding him that being the top scorer and lifting the trophy are two very different stories.

This isn't the first time it's happened to him. At PSG he reached one final, in 2020, and spent seven seasons chasing that same trophy without ever grabbing it. He switched jerseys looking for exactly this: a club where the Champions League is almost part of its DNA. Two years later, with 86 goals for Real Madrid and two Pichichi awards in his pocket, the big-eared trophy still hasn't shown up.

"We have to win"

His return after the World Cup came with comments that carry weight. Mbappé spoke to the club's media and got straight to the point, setting aside any personal achievements.

Especially at Real Madrid, you have to win titles, and that's why I'm here.Kylian Mbappé

And he closed with an even shorter, more forceful line: "We have to win." He then expanded on the idea that individual stats no longer satisfy him: "There's nothing more important than winning titles with the team." Those words come after two seasons without major collective trophies for Real Madrid, something that weighs heavier in that locker room than at almost any other club.

Even his farewell to the World Cup, after France's elimination, produced a line that sums up well how he's thinking at this point in his career: "The top scorer title, I accept it with pride, but it would have been so much better with the trophy too." Different stage, same feeling he carries with him regarding the Champions League.

Mourinho, the new piece of the puzzle

José Mourinho returned to Real Madrid more than twelve years after his first spell in charge, arriving with a message built around commitment and discipline rather than individual names. When asked how he planned to fit Mbappé, Vinícius and Bellingham into the same team, he avoided setting up any hierarchy:

They are incredible players, and incredible players want to play with other incredible players.José Mourinho

The coach was also clear about what he expects from the group: "We need to be a team, work well, and not try to negotiate things that are non-negotiable." On Mbappé specifically, he spoke of a "stratospheric" level and pointed out that he rejoined the squad earlier than expected to put himself under the new coaching staff's orders, something that didn't go unnoticed at the club.

The league opener, a narrow win over Espanyol with a decisive goal from Carlos Espí that Mbappé had a hand in, showed a team still finding its footing, with the Frenchman short on rhythm after the World Cup. Nothing unusual this early in the season. What hasn't changed is the underlying goal: this time, Mbappé himself says, there's no room for more detours. The Champions League is starting up again, and he's setting out to hunt it down once more.
