Mexico Eyes 2029 Club World Cup with Seven Stadiums and Government Backing
The Mexican Football Federation has already put forward its bid, backed by the infrastructure and political support needed to compete against the United States, Brazil and Qatar.

A country raising its hand to host a Club World Cup might sound like a distant idea, almost from another era. But Mexico has already done it, and it did so just weeks after the curtain fell on the 2026 World Cup. The ambition is no small one: the country wants to become host of the 2029 Club World Cup, and it already has seven large-capacity stadiums on the table, government backing and a fresh relationship with FIFA following its recent success.
The idea came straight from the Mexican Football Federation itself. It was commissioner Mikel Arriola who said it plainly: Mexico is going after the Club World Cup. And he didn't float it as a passing thought. On May 11, 2026, he laid out in detail why he believes the country has more than enough arguments in its favor.
We're going to submit Mexico's bid for the 2029 tournament. We're in a very relevant position. And yes, without a doubt, as a member of FIFA's men's club competitions committee, Mexico has what it takes, knowing how the number of clubs is growing, it has the elements to put forward Mexico's candidacy for the Club World Cup.Mikel Arriola
Are There Enough Stadiums?
Here's the obvious question: does Mexico have the infrastructure for something like this? The immediate point of reference is the tournament's first edition, when the United States offered up 11 stadiums, eight of them with more than 40,000 seats. FIFA also requires a venue with a capacity of at least 80,000 for the opening match and the final, and there Mexico already holds a strong card: Estadio Banorte, with room for 87,000 people, which also served as the opening venue for the 2026 World Cup.
And that's not the only one. The country has seven stadiums above 40,000 in capacity: Olimpico de CU (60,000), Jalisco (56,000), BBVA (53,000), Cuauhtemoc (51,000), Akron (49,000) and Universitario (42,000). To that list you can add five more venues with capacity above 25,000, such as Nemesio Diez, TSM Corona, Hidalgo, Corregidora and Libertad Financiera, though some will need renovations to meet FIFA standards. Estadio Caliente also enters the conversation, but with one specific issue: it has artificial turf, so it would need to switch to natural or hybrid grass to be considered.
Political Backing, Another Key Piece
Hosting a tournament of this magnitude doesn't rest on stadiums alone. FIFA asks for government guarantees: tax exemptions, security, infrastructure. And in Mexico, that front appears to be covered, largely because the government already went through that experience with the 2026 World Cup and because the country already has another commitment confirmed on the calendar: it will host the 2031 Women's World Cup. That's how Rommel Pacheco, head of Conade, put it.
The Mexican Football Federation still has to raise its hand with the right body. As you know, federations are civil associations, each one has its own system, but if Mexico wants to host some international event, we'll be happy and we'll be great hosts.Rommel Pacheco
President Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed the topic, though cautiously, on July 8, 2026.
Yes. We're going to look at the conditions; they always have to be favorable conditions for Mexico. It would be a good thing for Mexico overall, but we have to look at the conditions.Claudia Sheinbaum
The competition won't be easy. The United States, Brazil and Qatar also want the 2029 Club World Cup, and each arrives with its own case to make. But Mexico has something none of its rivals can show yet: the fresh experience of having hosted, with strong public response, a World Cup just a few months ago. That showcase, more than any stadium, could end up being the strongest argument behind its bid.
