Michael Hoyos breaks scoring drought with a brace as Sporting Cristal thrash Sport Huancayo 4-1
The 35-year-old Argentine forward ended a six-game scoreless streak with two headers in the Clausura victory.

Six matches without a single goal to celebrate. That was the burden Michael Hoyos carried into this Saturday's game at Estadio Alberto Gallardo. The wait ended in the best way possible: with a brace and a 4-1 rout by Sporting Cristal over Sport Huancayo, in matchday 5 of the 2026 Torneo Clausura in Liga 1.
The 35-year-old Argentine forward arrived at the Rimac club as one of the marquee signings for the second half of the season following his stint at Newell's Old Boys. But the goal had eluded him longer than expected. Until now. And he made up for it in style, scoring twice with headers that put any doubts about his finishing to rest.
The first goal came early, in the 11th minute. Santiago Gonzalez delivered a pinpoint corner kick, and Hoyos, who joined from Ecuador's Independiente del Valle, rose above the defense to head the ball home and open the scoring in front of a crowd that had been eagerly waiting for this moment. Roberto Mosquera had chosen to pair him with Hernan Barcos up front, a partnership designed specifically to exploit both players' aerial threat, and the plan worked to perfection right from the start.
The second goal came much later in the match, in the 73rd minute, making it 3-1. Yoshimar Yotun curled a free kick from just outside the box with a precision that looked hand-delivered, and Hoyos, again with a header from close range, made no mistake to complete his personal brace.
A debut that took its time to pay off
Hoyos had officially debuted in Sporting Cristal colors on July 17, in a win over Deportivo Garcilaso. Since then he added five more Liga 1 appearances and also saw minutes in the Copa Sudamericana against Red Bull Bragantino, but the net kept eluding him. That kind of scoreless stretch is common for any forward who arrives midseason and has to adjust to a new squad and a different style of soccer, but it still creates a certain unease, both for the player and for fans expecting quick returns from new signings.
Now, with this brace, Hoyos has finally opened his scoring account in Peruvian soccer and arrives with the confidence he needed to fight for a regular starting spot in Mosquera's lineup, just as the championship enters its most demanding stretch. For Sporting Cristal, the rout over Sport Huancayo not only delivers three crucial points in the Clausura standings, but also confirms that the attacking partnership with Barcos can keep giving opponents headaches in the air.
