Mikel Arteta signs contract extension with Arsenal through 2030

The Spanish coach, who has already won the Premier League and two FA Cups at the helm, has extended his contract and cemented his place as the third longest serving manager in club history.

Mikel Arteta signs contract extension with Arsenal through 2030

Sometimes the least surprising news is exactly the news a club needs. That was the case at the Emirates on Wednesday, when Arsenal confirmed that Mikel Arteta had signed a contract extension through the summer of 2030, a deal that had felt like a formality for months but still sends a clear signal about where the north London project is headed.

The Spanish coach took over the dugout in December 2019, arriving from Manchester City's coaching staff, where he worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant. Since then he has been building something of his own at the club. He won the 2020 FA Cup in his very first season, and last year he delivered the trophy every Gunners fan had been waiting more than two decades for: the Premier League, the club's first in 23 years.

With this new deal, Arteta becomes the third longest serving manager in Arsenal's history, moving past a heavyweight name like George Graham. Only two absolute club legends remain ahead of him: Arsène Wenger and George Allison. That is no small feat for a man who, before taking charge in the dugout, had already worn the red and white as a player between 2011 and his retirement in 2016, a spell in which he also picked up two FA Cups as a footballer.

A bond that goes beyond results

To announce the extension, the club skipped the usual cold press release. Arsenal put together recorded messages from fans around the world, along with voices from inside the dressing room such as Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly and captain Martin Odegaard, plus former players who once shared a locker room with Arteta, like Santi Cazorla. In one way or another, they all spoke about the growth the team has shown under his leadership.

The coach himself did not hide his emotion when discussing the moment:

It's a privilege to tie my future to the club and to keep working with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal. This club is unique, both in its character and in the emotions it brings out, and I feel deeply privileged that our journey together continues.Mikel Arteta

The continuity does not stop at the main dugout. The club confirmed that Arteta's entire coaching staff also signed on for four more years, a clear sign that the plan is to keep intact the structure that delivered the title last season.

Even before this new deal, Arteta was already the longest serving manager at a single club in the Premier League. Now, with a contract running through 2030, he has secured several more years to keep writing his story at a club that, in his own words, has given him a feeling few places can match.
