MLS: Real Salt Lake hosts a St. Louis City side fighting for the West lead

The model favors St. Louis City (43%) over Real Salt Lake (30%) in a historically even matchup that projects goals at both ends.

MLS: Real Salt Lake hosts a St. Louis City side fighting for the West lead

There are 15 points separating tenth place from second place in the West, and that tells you everything about what Real Salt Lake and St. Louis City SC are walking into at America First Field. While the Utah side is fighting just to patch together an uneven season, St. Louis arrives as one of the clear contenders to finish at the top of the table in MLS.

Real Salt Lake sits 10th with a record of 10 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses in 30 matches, with 45 goals scored and 48 allowed so far this season. The last five games haven't followed a clean pattern: two wins, a draw and two losses, closing out with a victory in their most recent match. At home, though, Pablo Mastroeni's team has shown a different face: across fifteen matches as host in this same 2026 MLS campaign they're averaging 1.86 goals scored and 1.4 allowed per game, with a particularly productive start to matches, since their most productive offensive stretch comes in the first 15 minutes. Sergi Solans stands out as the top scorer in that sample, with 12 goals. St. Louis City SC, meanwhile, sits second in the Western Conference, with 14 wins, 9 draws and just 7 losses in their 30 matches, 56 goals scored and 41 allowed, the best goal difference of the two sides. Over their last five outings they've collected two wins, two draws and one loss, a solid run without being overwhelming. On the road this same MLS season, their output drops a notch compared to home form: 1.46 goals scored and 1.46 allowed per game across that 15-game sample, with clean sheets in just 13% of those matches. Simon Becher leads the way there with 9 goals, followed by Rafael Navarro with 8.

What the history says

Between the two sides there's a certain parity hidden behind the attacking firepower: of the 7 meetings on record, Real Salt Lake has won 3, there have been 3 draws and St. Louis has won once, with a combined 13 goals for the home side against 12 for the visitors. An even head to head, with a tendency toward open scorelines.

Projected lineups

Based on their recent matches, Real Salt Lake would likely field Rafael Cabral in goal behind a back line of Philip Quinton, Kobi Henry, Dominik Marczuk and DeAndre Yedlin. The midfield would feature Noel Caliskan, Morgan Guilavogui and Stijn Spierings, with Sergi Solans leading the attack. This is an estimated lineup, not confirmed, with medium reliability.

St. Louis City SC, for their part, would likely keep Roman Bürki in goal, with Timo Baumgartl, Dante Polvara and Fallou Fall across the back. Tomas Totland, Chris Durkin, Conrad Wallem and Daniel Edelman would round out the midfield, while Carlo Holse, Rafael Navarro and Alexandru Matan project to lead the line. This too is a projected, inferred lineup rather than an official one.

What the numbers say before kickoff

Our model gives a slight edge to the visitors, though without anyone walking away with the whole pie:

OutcomeProbability
Real Salt Lake win30%
Draw27%
St. Louis City SC win43%

The split is fairly tight: St. Louis goes in as the favorite at 43%, but the home side's 30% and the 27% chance of a draw leave the door wide open. This is our own estimate drawn from the season's trends, not a betting line or a closed forecast. The expected goals back up that reading: 1.38 for Real Salt Lake against 1.66 for St. Louis, a combined 3.04 that lines up with a 57% probability of over 2.5 goals and a 64% chance both teams find the net.

With those numbers on the table, everything points to an open game at America First Field, where Real Salt Lake needs points to climb the table and St. Louis will look to keep breathing down Vancouver's neck at the top of the West.
