Monaco's offer for Erik Lira falls short of Cruz Azul's asking price

There's new business on Ivan Alonso's desk. A few days ago, Monaco's first formal offer for Erik Lira landed there, the midfielder who has more than one European club losing sleep. The story has been simmering for weeks, but now there's finally paper on the table.

The problem, for Cruz Azul, is the number. Sources close to La Maquina confirmed to ESPN that the Monegasque club's proposal is, for now, considered insufficient. It's not a flat no: the Celeste front office is willing to negotiate and is waiting on a second offer that comes closer to what the club has in mind before letting go of one of its most consistent players.

To understand why the offer falls short, just look at the comparison. Last week, Al Jazira put 14 million dollars on the table for 100 percent of Lira's rights. Monaco's bid is notably lower, and on top of that it's for only a percentage of his rights, not the full amount. That's the gap both clubs will need to work through in the coming days.

A roster spot that needs to open up

Monaco isn't just negotiating on price, the club is also working through its own internal roster math. To register Lira, Monaco needs to free up a non-EU player slot, and that's where Folarin Balogun's departure comes in. Without that move sorted out, any financial agreement wouldn't count for much, so the two negotiations are running side by side.

Will this get resolved quickly? Everything points to the next few hours and days being decisive. Cruz Azul isn't shutting the door on getting the deal done, but it also isn't going to sell off one of its most sought-after players just to speed things along. And as always, the market has more than one player involved: another European club is also keeping close tabs on the Mexican midfielder, though so far only Monaco has been bold enough to put a formal offer on the table.

With Al Jazira having already shown its hand and Monaco trying to adjust its own, the ball is now in La Maquina's court. Nothing is settled yet, but the genuine interest from at least two clubs makes clear that Lira's name is carrying real weight outside Mexico. The picture, of course, could change at any moment if a third offer shows up or if the club from the Principality decides to improve its bid.
