Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid After a $225 Million Shopping Spree, With Diomandé as the Priciest Signing in Club History

Youth academy sales bankroll a summer of reinforcements up front and at the back, though central midfield remains the unsolved backbone.

Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid After a $225 Million Shopping Spree, With Diomandé as the Priciest Signing in Club History

Two hundred twenty five million euros spent on new signings, with another two hundred million coming in (or close to coming in) from academy sales. That's the numerical summary of a summer that has been anything but quiet at Real Madrid. But the detail that really signaled the shift in direction came before any transfer at all: in June, the club announced the return of José Mourinho to the sideline, and everything else started moving from there.

Mourinho is once again, the way Xabi Alonso was last year, the name generating the most excitement among Madrid fans. He isn't arriving as just another coach: he's here to bring order, to restore discipline to a locker room that has delivered more headaches than joy over the last two seasons. And he hasn't come alone. The club has handed him six new faces to rebuild practically half the roster.

Diomandé, the Most Expensive Bet in Club History

If one name sums up the ambition behind this transfer window, it's Yan Diomandé. His arrival, valued at 125 million euros, makes him the most expensive signing in Real Madrid's history. He comes in to fill a position that had long been searching for an owner: right wing, something of a no man's land lately between Rodrygo's inconsistent form and the doubts surrounding Mastantuono. With Diomandé, Mourinho adds a piece designed to make the Mbappé-Vinícius partnership click even better, and he does it with a player arriving at just the right age to break out.

Alongside him, another attacking option: Carlos Espí, who joins for roughly 25 million with a profile similar to what Joselu once provided, that backup striker every big club needs at some point during the season.

Defense Reinforced, But One Question Mark Remains

In the back line, the overhaul has also been deep. Neither Álvaro Carreras, nor Dean Huijsen, nor Trent Alexander-Arnold fully convinced last season, so reinforcements arrived: Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer following David Alaba's departure, Denzel Dumfries for 20 million replacing Dani Carvajal, and Marc Cucurella for 55 million taking over the spot left by Fran García. Cucurella and Dumfries look like safe bets. The question mark remains at the center of defense: a lot will depend on how Konaté performs and on the health of Antonio Rüdiger and Éder Militão, because Mourinho asked back in June for another reliable center back and, for now, everything suggests that request will go unanswered.

The Central Midfielder Who Still Hasn't Arrived

This is the weak spot of the entire transfer window. After the deal for Rodri fell through, Real Madrid once again heads into the season without a central midfielder capable of providing balance and vision in the middle of the park. The arrival of Bernardo Silva, who joins on a free transfer to take Dani Ceballos's spot, is the only bright spot in that area: Mourinho plans to hand him control of the double pivot, and much of the team's performance will hinge on how he delivers. It's a good addition, no doubt, but it doesn't cover the underlying gap.

In goal there are no surprises: Thibaut Courtois remains the undisputed starter with Andriy Lunin as backup, and the only movement has been Fran González's departure to Sevilla.

The Academy, the Summer's Biggest Financier

If the incoming market has been expensive, the outgoing one has been historic. Real Madrid's youth academy has sold off a dozen players and is still negotiating a couple more deals, which will leave the club with close to 200 million euros in revenue from academy graduates alone. That includes Nico Paz (60 million), Gonzalo García (40 million), Víctor Muñoz (20.5 million), Mario Gila (15 million), Álvaro Rodríguez and Álex Jiménez (12.5 million each), César Palacios (10 million), Jacobo Ortega (10 million), Víctor Valdepeñas (8 million), Fran García (4 million), and Mario Martín and Fran González (3 million each). Add to that list Manuel Ángel, close to a deal with Almería, and David Jiménez, who is weighing offers from the top flight.

To keep Castilla from being left short, the club is already working on replacements: there's talk of forward Rayan Zinebi arriving from Granada, and the club is also tracking midfielder Sergio Martínez of Racing Santander, though for now Madrid isn't willing to pay the 3 million euro release clause the Cantabrian club is asking for.

Taken together, it's been a summer of contrasts: an attack reinforced with exciting names, a defense improved but with one lingering blemish, and a midfield still waiting on the piece it has lacked for years. With Mourinho in charge, the question hanging in the air is whether these pieces are enough to compete for every trophy again.
