Vinícius fades, Diomande shines: Madrid thrash Leipzig 4-1 without their longtime starter
The Brazilian left the field without so much as a wave to the stands and now faces the Clasico suspended, while his understudy notched his third goal in four matches.

Some images say more than any stat line. And the sight of Vinícius Júnior trudging off the field in the 70th minute, head down, barely acknowledging the stands, was exactly that: the summary of yet another night in which the Brazilian failed to find his best form, even as Real Madrid cruised to a commanding 4-1 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
The scoreline, with goals from Bernardo Silva (for the visitors), Arda Güler, Mbappé and Diomande, only tells part of the story. The other part belongs to a Vinícius who, during the first half, still hinted he might turn things around: two shots that ended up in the hands of Leipzig's goalkeeper were his only offensive contributions. After that, silence. No space, no dribbling bursts, none of the electricity that made him so feared for years. The Brazilian gradually faded until Jose Mourinho decided to pull him off.
What stood out was who replaced him. Yan Diomande, the most expensive signing in the club's history, needed barely more than fifteen minutes to make his mark: he set up Mbappé for the third goal, then scored the fourth himself with a well-struck volley off a pass from Arda Güler. It was also his third goal in his last four matches, after going scoreless in his first eight appearances since arriving from Leipzig itself.
The contrast between the two is no longer a coincidence. Diomande made the most of the four-match suspension Vinícius served following his red card against Villarreal, carving out a spot that seemed untouchable just a few months ago. Against Sevilla he had already shown a goal and a burst of speed that began raising a question nobody used to ask: who should be playing on the left wing for Real Madrid?
Mourinho restored Vinícius to the starting lineup against Leipzig, but didn't get the response he was hoping for. And the immediate future leaves no room for debate: with the Clasico just four days away, the Brazilian will be unable to play against Barcelona, his second suspended match following the Villarreal incident.
After the match, Mourinho defended his player, though without hiding the reality of the game.
For me, Vini had a good match. Tactically, for his coach, he had a good match... He could have scored a great goal and the goalkeeper made a great save. I wouldn't say he's sad, that's something only he can explain, but his coach is happy.Jose Mourinho
The Portuguese coach also denied that bringing on Diomande had the Clasico in mind: "The intention wasn't to think about the Clasico, it was to think about this match. I knew a fresh Diomande, coming on with half an hour still to play, is hard to handle. His speed matters." He went further when asked about the whistles Vinícius again received at the Bernabeu: "When they whistle you away from home, it's motivation. When they whistle you at home, it hurts."
Mbappé, his attacking teammate, preferred to focus on the Brazilian's confidence:
If he's sad, it's because he wants to give so much to the team and the fans. He needs to be calm and proud of who he is. A great player has to be proud of who he is. His confidence will come back, because he has the quality.Kylian Mbappé
Meanwhile, Diomande is enjoying himself and building his case. Vinícius, on the other hand, will have to wait for his next eligible match to try to reclaim what, until recently, seemed to belong to him alone.
