Necaxa and Cruz Azul Meet in Aguascalientes with Both Sides Desperate for Points in Matchday 6
Both teams arrive banged up and in need of a win to climb a tightly packed table where every point matters.
Aguascalientes hosts a match this Friday that promises tension from the opening whistle. Estadio Victoria opens the Matchday 6 slate of the Mexican tournament with a clash between two teams badly in need of points: Necaxa and Cruz Azul.
This is no ordinary matchup. Both sides arrive in nearly identical situations: few points on the board, a pressing need to turn things around, and the sense that the margin for error is running out. Los Rayos, led by Joel Huiqui, have been trending downward in recent weeks and are dragging a losing streak they hope to snap once and for all by leaning on home advantage, where visiting teams have historically struggled.
Cruz Azul, for its part, arrives banged up. La Maquina fell at home 0-2 to Atlas in the previous round, a result that raised doubts about how the team is functioning. On top of that comes the uncertainty surrounding Erik Lira, a key piece of the Cruz Azul midfield whose future is stirring noise behind the scenes at a moment when the team needs stability, not distractions.
How the two teams arrive
Necaxa salvaged a valuable point on the road against Pumas, drawing at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario, and sits in eleventh place with seven points after five matches played. It's not a comfortable spot, but it at least keeps alive hopes of climbing toward the playoff zone if the team can grab all three points at home.
Cruz Azul sits a notch below: twelfth place with six points through five games. The loss to Atlas stung, and not just in the standings. The team needs to show a real response on the field before the results crisis turns into something harder to reverse.
As for the probable lineups, Necaxa is expected to start Luis Jimenez in goal, with a back line made up of Agustin Oliveros, Alexis Pena, Kaiky Naves and Carlos Vargas, while the midfield would feature Lorenzo Faravelli, Danny Leyva, Ricardo Monreal and Owen Gonzalez, with Julian Carranza and Matias Espindola up top.
On Cruz Azul's side, Kevin Mier would start between the posts, protected by Omar Campos, Jesus Orozco, Willer Ditta and Jeremy Marquez. In midfield, Jose Paradela, Carlos Rodriguez, Andres Montano and Agustin Palavecino, with Christian Ebere and Nicolas Ibanez leading the attack.
The match is set for 7:00 pm Mexico City time (8:00 pm in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru; 9:00 pm on the US East Coast and in Chile; 10:00 pm in Argentina and Uruguay) this Friday, August 28, and will be one of three matches opening the sixth round of the tournament.
With the standings so tightly bunched, every point is starting to carry extra weight. For Necaxa, winning at home would mean snapping the bad streak and jumping right into the fight for the top of the table. For Cruz Azul, it would be a way to shake off the psychological blow from the last match and remember there's still plenty of time to right the course.
