New York City FC stuns Real Salt Lake with 2-0 road win at America First Field

Nicolas Fernandez Mercau set up a free kick just outside the box and, in the 40th minute, curled it straight into the top corner. That stunner opened the scoring and set New York City FC on its way to a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake at America First Field, a result that flips the script on what had been a first half largely controlled by the home side.

Because the match, at least in terms of play, didn't follow that plan. Real Salt Lake created chances early: by the 7th minute, Saba Lobjanidze was already testing Matt Freese from outside the area, and between the 15th and 19th minutes the home side strung together a string of shots (Luca Moisa, Lobjanidze twice more, Juan Jose Arias with a header that clipped the crossbar, and Morgan Guilavogui) without beating Freese. Real Salt Lake kept knocking, but couldn't finish, and that was the story of the night.

Real Salt Lake pushed until the end, piling up corner kicks down the stretch (as many as eight in the second half alone) with headers from Aiden Hezarkhani and Lineker Rodrigues that failed to find the target, but the home side couldn't pull one back.
