Red Bulls Stun Messi's Inter Miami, Shut Them Out 2-0
An early own goal and a stoppage-time strike from Emil Forsberg gave Michael Bradley's side an unexpected win over an Inter Miami CF team that controlled the ball but never looked dangerous.

With just 33.5% possession and 19 shots to 12, the New York Red Bulls walked away with a 2-0 win over Inter Miami CF that nobody saw coming on paper. An own goal in the sixth minute and a late sealer from Emil Forsberg in stoppage time were enough for Michael Bradley's team to keep a clean sheet against an Inter Miami CF side that controlled the ball for most of the match but kept running into a brick wall in front of goal.
The MLS matchup opened with the Red Bulls pressing from the first minute. Julian Hall gave an early warning in the third minute with a shot that narrowly missed the target, and the pressure paid off soon after: in the 6th minute, an own goal by Casemiro put the home side up 1-0. From there, the Red Bulls kept creating chances, with Cade Cowell, Ronald Donkor, Jorge Ruvalcaba and Mohammed Sofo all testing their luck in a first half that saw the New Jersey club head to the locker room ahead on the scoreboard despite seeing far less of the ball.
A Second-Half Siege That Finally Paid Off
The story didn't change much after the break. Inter Miami CF turned to the bench, bringing on Lionel Messi in the 55th minute for Riquelme Fillipi among other changes, and started to create more chances, with attempts from Rodrigo De Paul, Sergio Reguilon and Telasco Segovia, who even rattled the crossbar in the 83rd minute. But the Red Bulls held firm behind a defensive wall that turned away several clear-cut chances: Jorge Ruvalcaba alone had three shots stopped within a matter of minutes, and Eric Choupo-Moting, after coming off the bench, also tried his luck without success.
The clincher came on the final play of the match. In the 90th minute, assisted by Cameron Harper, Emil Forsberg finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it a final 2-0 and cap off a perfect night for the home side.
By the Numbers
| Stat | New York Red Bulls | Inter Miami CF |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 33.5 | 66.5 |
| Shots | 19 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 2 |
| Big chances | 5 | 1 |
| Corners | 3 | 2 |
| Passes | 354 | 716 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 5 |
The stat that best sums up the night is big chances: five for the Red Bulls against just one for Inter Miami CF. The post-match xG figures, calculated from the shots taken, tell the same story: 3.188 for the home side versus 1.226 for the visitors, a gap that confirms Inter Miami CF's territorial dominance never translated into real danger for goalkeeper Ethan Horvath.
The result flies in the face of everything projected before kickoff. The pre-match odds gave the Red Bulls just a 25% chance of winning, compared to 53% for Inter Miami CF and 22% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.54 for the home side and 2.29 for the visitors. None of it held up: the team given the longest odds ended up winning comfortably and keeping a clean sheet to boot.
In the Eastern Conference standings, this result doesn't change the bigger picture much: Inter Miami CF remains in second place with 55 points, sixteen clear of the Red Bulls, who sit ninth with 39. But on the field, at least for one night, that gap in the standings was completely turned on its head.
