Newcastle United Punishes Wasteful Tottenham with Ruthless 0-2 Win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The Magpies made the most of a decisive ten-minute spell in the second half to take all three points, leaving the home side stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Newcastle United Punishes Wasteful Tottenham with Ruthless 0-2 Win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham Hotspur controlled the ball, created more chances and still ended up with nothing to show for it. Newcastle United left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a 0-2 win built in barely ten minutes of the second half, and that was enough to leave the home side stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table.

The first half was an even exchange of corners and shots with no reward for either side. Tottenham Hotspur pushed forward with Pedro Porro and Sandro Tonali testing shots from outside the box, while Newcastle United answered through Joe Willock and Yoane Wissa looking for space in behind. Neither side found the net, and the teams went into the break scoreless at 0-0.

The one-two punch that decided it

The game turned on its head in just ten minutes. In the 61st minute, Anthony Elanga struck a left-footed shot from the center of the box after a headed pass from Amar Dedic, putting Newcastle United up 1-0. Tottenham Hotspur had no time to recover before the second blow landed in the 71st minute: Yoane Wissa finished from close range on the left side after a corner kick assisted by Nick Woltemade, making it a final 0-2.

The home side kept trying until the final whistle. Mikey Moore, Mohammed Kudus and Dominic Solanke all came off the bench looking to cut the deficit, and there were late shots from Mateus Fernandes, Omar Marmoush and Solanke himself, even with four minutes of stoppage time to play with. But Newcastle United defended the lead without any real scares.

Numbers that fell short

The stats leave a paradox: Tottenham Hotspur had more of the ball and more shots, but none of it mattered in the end.

The xG figures calculated after the fact based on shot location back up that reading: Tottenham Hotspur generated 1.216 expected goals against Newcastle United's 0.962, a minimal difference that paints a picture of a game far more even than the final score suggests. Newcastle United was simply far more efficient with the little it had.

The result also runs counter to what was projected before kickoff. Our preview gave Tottenham Hotspur a 38% chance of winning, Newcastle United 36%, and the draw 26%, with combined expected goals of 3.26 (1.65 for the home side and 1.61 for the visitors). The forecast pointed to an open, back-and-forth game with goals at both ends, and it ended up being a clean sheet for Newcastle United that delivered a full three points.

Where it leaves the table

With this result, Newcastle United moves to 4 points in the competition, with 1 win and 1 draw from 2 matches played, sitting in third place. Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, suffers its second defeat in as many games and remains on zero points, bottom of the table with a goal difference of -5. The gap between the two sides in the standings now stands at 4 points, and Sunday's match only confirmed it on the field.
