Nice and Lorient Share the Points in a Lively 0-0 Draw in Ligue 1

Both sides created good chances but lacked a finishing touch in an even matchup that left plenty of positive attacking signs.

Nice and Lorient Share the Points in a Lively 0-0 Draw in Ligue 1

Nice and Lorient played out a 0-0 draw at the Allianz Riviera, in a Ligue 1 matchup that produced plenty of good attacking play but no goal to reward either side's effort. The hosts controlled possession and generated more of the play, but ran into a visiting defense that knew how to hold firm at the right moments time and again.

A Back and Forth Affair Without a Final Touch

From the opening whistle, Nice took control of the match and repeatedly probed the opposing box down the flanks. As early as the 13th minute, Sofiane Diop tested the keeper with a shot that was saved, and just a minute later Gauthier Hein and Jonathan Clauss strung together two more attempts that were also turned away. The first half featured an especially intense stretch between the 13th and 20th minutes, with six shots between the two sides, including one from Jean-Victor Makengo that flew just wide for Lorient.

The visitors did not sit back and answered with clear chances of their own through Gabin Bernardeau and Makengo himself, who tested the home goalkeeper with a low shot that was saved. Antoine Mendy, for Nice, came close to putting his team ahead with a header that grazed the crossbar in the 31st minute. Despite the back and forth, the first half ended scoreless, with Zoumana Diallo picking up the match's only yellow card for a dangerous play.

In the second half, Lorient came out with more purpose and produced the most dangerous sequence of the match: between the 60th and 61st minutes, Theo Le Bris, Noah Cadiou, Jean-Victor Makengo and Mamadou Kone fired off four shots in barely a minute, all of them turned away by Nice's defense and goalkeeper. It was the moment the match could have swung in the visitors' favor. Nice responded by bringing on Mohamed-Ali Cho and Nathan Ngoumou, who added fresh legs but could not find the decisive finish despite a few chances late on. In stoppage time, Aiyegun Tosin had the last clear opportunity with a header that sailed over the bar, sealing the draw.

What the Numbers Say

Nice was the more dominant side in terms of possession and overall buildup, while Lorient proved sharper when it came to converting its clearest chances.

The big chances tally also favored Lorient, which created four clear situations compared to none for the hosts, which helps explain why, according to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, the visitors ended up with a higher figure: 1.751 compared to Nice's 1.349. In other words, despite seeing less of the ball, Lorient was the team that came closer to scoring based on the quality of its chances.

A Preview That Did Not Fully Play Out

Before kickoff, our projection gave Nice a 36% chance of winning, 30% for a draw and 34% for a Lorient victory, with a combined expected goals total of 2.61 (1.32 for the hosts and 1.29 for the visitors). The final result confirmed the least likely of the three outcomes, the draw, though the spread of odds did reflect just how even the match turned out to be on the field.

A Point for Each Side

With this result, both Nice and Lorient collect their first point of the tournament after matchday one, each with a draw as their only result so far in their tournament record. The split leaves both sides with positive attacking signs, but also with the sense that they lacked the finishing touch in the final third to take home all three points in a match that had rhythm, chances and several substitutions aimed at breaking the deadlock without success.
