Nice and Le Mans share the points at the Allianz Riviera

A shot from outside the box into the top corner was enough to put Le Mans ahead at the Allianz Riviera, but Nice found the equalizer before halftime and the match finished 1-1. Neither side could break the deadlock in the second half, despite a shot off the post and several late chances.

The visitors' goal came early. In the 12th minute, Adil Bourabaa struck a right-footed shot from outside the area that flew into the top corner, off an assist from Jean Vercruysse. It was the reward for a strong start from Le Mans, who had already given warning shortly before with a shot from Vercruysse and another from Alexandre Lauray, both off target but with clear intent.

Nice, who controlled more of the ball, took time to find a way through. They had a good chance when Axel Witsel headed just over the bar from a corner, but the equalizer didn't come until right before the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, on a fast break, Sofiane Diop slipped a through ball for Elye Wahi, who finished with his right foot from a sharp angle on the right to make it 1-1 at the break.

A scoreless but lively second half

In the second half both sides turned to their benches looking for a spark: Le Mans brought on Habib Diallo, Antoine Rabillard and Samuel Yohou, while Nice responded with Gauthier Hein, Mohammed Amoura and later Antoine Mendy and Ali Abdi. Chances came for both sides: Mohamed Abdelmonem headed wide from a corner, Mohammed Amoura tried his luck on a counterattack and Jonathan Clauss forced a save from the visiting goalkeeper. The clearest chance to break the tie fell to Le Mans in stoppage time: in the 86th minute, Louis Mafouta struck from the center of the box off an assist from Rabillard and the ball crashed off the right post. Shortly after, Habib Diallo also came close, rattling the crossbar with a shot from outside the area. Neither went in, and the score stayed put.

What the numbers say

Nice controlled more of the ball and generated more overall play, but couldn't turn that into clear chances in front of goal.

The even split in chances shows up in the estimated xG based on the match's shots: 1.00 for Nice against 1.03 for Le Mans, essentially even and in line with a tight result.

Our preview had pointed to a match tilted in Nice's favor, with a 50% chance of a home win, 28% for a draw and 22% for Le Mans, along with expected goals of 1.58 for the home side and 0.97 for the visitors. The draw ended up being the outcome, and Le Mans not only backed up that forecast but was the team that came closest to snatching all three points in the final stretch.
