Martín Palermo Brings a Proven Track Record Against Brazilian Clubs Into Platense's Quarterfinal Clash With Fluminense
The coach won titles by getting the better of Brazilian opponents at crucial moments, including Fluminense on two separate occasions.
There's something about the tracksuit Martín Palermo wears on the sideline that might put Platense fans at ease ahead of a matchup of this magnitude. It's not a magic formula or a guarantee, but it is a history: the story of a man who rose to the occasion precisely when the Brazilian opponent of the day pushed hardest. Now, with Platense into the biggest quarterfinal in its history against Fluminense, that history is back on the table.
As a player, wearing the Boca Juniors jersey, Palermo played 29 official matches against Brazilian teams and scored 10 goals. Of that total, 11 games came in the Copa Libertadores, with 5 goals included. The number that really matters, though, isn't so much the tally as the timing: the vast majority of those matches, 23 of the 29, and absolutely all of the Libertadores games, were played in knockout rounds. There, backed into a corner, with the tie on the line, Palermo found ways to hurt Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, Gremio and Sao Paulo.
The chapters that stuck
The first defining moment came in the 2000 Libertadores final against Palmeiras: he played all 180 minutes of a series that came down to the wire and scored the decisive penalty at the Morumbi, the goal that ended Boca's two-decade wait for that trophy. Six years later, in the 2006 Recopa, he once again became a nightmare for Sao Paulo: he scored in the first leg's 2-1 win and also in the 2-2 second leg, played in Brazil, to claim the trophy.
Perhaps the most emphatic chapter came in the first leg of the 2007 Libertadores final against Gremio: he scored the third goal in a 3-0 win at La Bombonera, a result that all but sealed the tie before the trip to Porto Alegre. It was no coincidence. That Boca side under Carlos Bianchi, with Juan Roman Riquelme and Guillermo Barros Schelotto as star teammates, was for years a genuine thorn in the side of Brazilian clubs in the decisive stages of continental competitions.
What history says about Fluminense specifically
And against Fluminense, the very team Platense now faces, there's history too. Palermo faced the Tricolor in four official CONMEBOL matches and scored twice. In the 2005 Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals, he scored the winning goal in a 2-0 second-leg victory that sent Boca through to the semifinals after a loss at the Maracana. In the 2008 Libertadores, they met again in the semifinals and he scored against Fluminense once more, this time at the Maracana itself, though on that occasion the Brazilian side advanced.
None of these numbers alone make Palermo a guarantee of anything. Soccer doesn't work that way. But when a team has as much on the line as it does in this quarterfinal, having someone on the bench who has already lived through, and won, that kind of night against Brazilian opposition is, at the very least, an edge that can't be ignored.
