Paraguay extends Gustavo Alfaro's contract through the 2030 World Cup after reaching the Round of 16 in Qatar
The Paraguayan Football Association confirmed the Argentine coach will stay on after a successful run at the 2026 World Cup, where his side knocked out Germany on penalties.

One photo and one line were all it took to confirm what everyone in Paraguay already assumed. Roberto Harrison, president of the Paraguayan Football Association (FPF), posted a picture on social media alongside Gustavo Alfaro, holding up an Albirroja jersey with the coach's name and the number 2030 printed on the back. Nothing more needed to be said: the Argentine coach's cycle with the national team continues.
The move surprises no one who followed Paraguay's run at the 2026 World Cup closely. Alfaro guided the Albirroja to the Round of 16 in the tournament held across Mexico, the United States and Canada, and along the way delivered one of the most memorable moments of the competition: the elimination of Germany on penalties in the round of 32. It was a result nobody had on their radar, and it put Paraguay squarely in the spotlight.
In the Round of 16, the team faced France and didn't back down. They pushed the European side to the limit before being eliminated, but what stuck was the picture of a competitive, well organized team with a clear identity of its own. That performance was enough to convince the federation that the project deserved to continue.
Eyes on 2030, with the 2028 Copa America along the way
With the renewal now confirmed, Alfaro begins a full new cycle. The immediate goal is to get Paraguay into the 2030 World Cup, though the qualification format for that edition has yet to be defined. Before that, though, there's a mandatory stop: the 2028 Copa America, which will serve as a gauge for the project ahead of qualifying.
For the FPF, the reasoning is straightforward: give continuity to a project that's only just starting to show results. Harrison himself made that clear in the caption of the post confirming the news.
2030, here we come.Roberto Harrison
The line, short and direct, sums up the mood surrounding the national team. After years of instability on the bench, finding a process that works, and one that's already producing concrete results at a World Cup, isn't something the federation is willing to cut short.
Now the challenge for Alfaro and his staff will be to sustain that level in upcoming competitions and to confirm at the 2028 Copa America that the leap shown at the 2026 World Cup wasn't an isolated chapter, but the start of something bigger.
