Paris FC thrashes Nice 3-0 in Ligue 1 with efficiency that defies the stats

A penalty at the quarter-hour mark, a counterattack finished off in seconds, and a header in stoppage time off a corner kick: that's how Paris FC put together a 3-0 win over Nice at the Stade Jean Bouin in Ligue 1. Three goals, three different scorers, Sinayoko, Chergui and Marchetti, and a result that leaves Nice with no answers and Paris FC at the top of the standings.

The match was largely decided by a play inside the box in the 17th minute. Youssouf Ndayishimiye fouled Ilan Kebbal inside the area, the referee pointed to the spot and also showed him a yellow card for dangerous play. Three minutes later, Lassine Sinayoko made no mistake from twelve yards: a low shot with his right foot, into the left corner, made it 1-0 in the 20th minute.

Nice had its chances in the first half, with Ngoumou, Diop and Clauss all testing the target without success, but went into the break down on the scoreboard. And the blow that tilted the game further came right at the start of the second half: in the 50th minute, off a quick counterattack, Samir Chergui received the ball from Ilan Kebbal and finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0. Nice tried to respond down the flanks with Clauss and with substitutes Wahi and Mendy, generating several shots between the 60th and 85th minutes, but ran into blocked or off-target attempts time and again.

The third goal came in the closing stretch, in the 88th minute, on a sequence that started from a corner kick: Sinayoko tried a header but couldn't connect, and the rebound fell to Vincent Marchetti, who had come on from the bench. His left-footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Patrick Zabi, sealed the score at 3-0.

The numbers behind a shared dominance

The curious part is that the stats don't tell the story of a blowout. Nice had more possession and more passes, and both teams finished level on shots and shots on target.

Where the difference does show up is in the quality of the chances. According to our xG estimate calculated after the fact based on shot location, Paris FC generated 2.887 expected goals compared to Nice's 0.699, a gap that explains why a scoreline so even in shot volume ended up so lopsided in the result.

Our preview published before kickoff projected something far tighter: 45% odds for Paris FC, 30% for a draw and 25% for Nice, with total expected goals of 2.4 (1.4 for the home side and 1 for the visitors). The final result went well beyond that expectation of a close game: the favorite won, yes, but with a decisiveness the preview hadn't anticipated.

What it means in the standings

With this result, Paris FC moves to 4 points in the tournament, with one win and one draw, no losses, and a goal difference of +3, putting the club in first place, though with just two matches played. Nice, on the other hand, sits on 1 point, with no wins, one draw and one loss, and a goal difference of -3, numbers that leave the club at the bottom of the table at this still-early stage of the campaign. The gap between the two right now stands at 3 points.

For Nice, it's an uncomfortable takeaway: the team controlled possession, generated plenty of shot volume, but couldn't translate any of it into goals, and on top of that paid dearly for every individual mistake, from the penalty to the lapse in concentration on the counter that led to the second goal. For Paris FC, meanwhile, efficiency was the deciding factor: with less possession, the team converted the chances it had and picked up a win that, for now at least, puts it on top.
