Paris FC and Lyon Split the Points in a Goalless, Chance-Filled Draw

Four shots on target to one, more than 56% possession and not a single goal to reward all that effort. Paris FC and Lyon played to a 0-0 draw at the Stade Jean Bouin, in a Ligue 1 match that produced more chances than finishes and a point that suited neither side too badly.

The match opened at a brisk pace. In the 7th minute, Lassine Sinayoko tried his luck from outside the box off an assist from Pablo Pagis, but the shot went just wide of the right post. Two minutes later it was Pagis himself who, set up by Sinayoko, sent the ball over the crossbar from inside the area. Lyon answered around the quarter-hour mark: a shot from Ernest Nuamah was blocked, and on the ensuing play, Nuamah tried again without success, the ball drifting wide of the right side of the goal.

The rest of the first half was littered with fouls (Paris FC committed 19 in all over the course of the match) and attempts that found neither keeper nor net: Ilan Kebbal forced a fine save from the visiting goalkeeper in the 29th minute, on the same play in which Pavel Sulc responded from the other flank. With that back and forth going unrewarded, the sides went into the break with the scoreboard blank.

More of the Same in the Second Half

The second half began with Paris FC again threatening: moments after the restart, Sinayoko tried once more from inside the area, and his shot was saved low. Shortly after, in the 49th minute, Luca Koleosho had a go as well, set up by Pagis, without luck. Lyon began to lose their grip on the match and, in the 62nd minute, were reduced in the physical battle when Loïs Openda was shown a yellow card for dangerous play, shortly before being substituted for Keito Nakamura.

Paris FC kept pressing: in the 68th minute Diego Coppola was also booked, and in the 76th Hamari Traoré picked up a yellow for a handball. With substitutions already made on both sides, Maxime Lopez came close in the 80th minute with a shot that grazed the left corner of the crossbar after a pass from Moses Simon, the clearest chance of the closing stretch for the home side. Lyon looked for a late reward in stoppage time, with a header from Felix Bacher in the 91st minute that was cleared, but the scoreline held firm.

The Numbers Behind the Draw

The shots on target figure explains fairly well the home side's edge in terms of chances created, though it wasn't enough to translate into a goal. According to our estimate of xG generated in the match (an in-house calculation based on shot location, not an official figure), Paris FC racked up 0.73 expected goals to Lyon's 0.46, a gap that backs up the home team's greater attacking volume without amounting to a lopsided affair.

The preview pointed in a different direction: our projection gave Lyon a 41% chance of winning, against 30% for Paris FC and 29% for a draw, with a combined total of 2.59 expected goals, split between 1.19 for the home side and 1.41 for the visitors. The final result fell well short of that goal forecast: the scales never tipped toward the visitors, nor was the match as prolific as anticipated.

In the standings, the draw leaves both clubs with 8 points from four matches played, each with 2 wins, 2 draws and no losses, sitting in third and fourth place respectively, with no gap in points between them. Neither did Paris FC manage to pull away, nor did Lyon suffer a damaging setback: a split that keeps both clubs stuck to the top of the table, just behind a Monaco and a Rennes side that have yet to taste defeat.
