Philadelphia Union Erase 3-0 Deficit to Stun Sporting Kansas City 3-4

Kansas City raced out to a 3-0 lead in just 15 minutes, and it looked like the night at Sporting Park would be a formality. Far from it: Philadelphia Union came all the way back to win 3-4, claiming all three points in one of those matches where the scoreboard changes hands several times in under half an hour.

The home side came out firing. In the 4th minute, Andre Luiz finished with his left foot off a counterattack set up by Lasse Berg Johnsen to make it 1-0. Five minutes later, Andre Luiz struck again, this time with a shot from outside the box assisted by Calvin Harris, doubling the lead to 2-0. Before the quarter-hour mark, Wyatt Meyer headed home a corner kick cross from Emir Karic from point-blank range to make it 3-0. Kansas City took that lead into halftime, having dominated a first half that looked all but decided.

Philadelphia Union's response

The second half was an entirely different story. In just four minutes, between the 63rd and 67th, Union completely flipped the match. First, Bruno Damiani pulled one back with a low shot off a cross from Frankie Westfield. Two minutes later, Cavan Sullivan leveled the score with a left-footed strike from the center of the box. Then in the 67th minute, Milan Iloski completed the stunning turnaround with a curling shot into the top corner to make it 3-3. The final blow came in the 72nd minute: an own goal by Zorhan Bassong gave Philadelphia Union the lead for good, and the visitors held on to win 3-4 despite having trailed by three goals.

Kansas City tried to respond down the stretch, with chances from Jayden Reid and a few other attempts, but they could not find the goal that would have at least salvaged a draw.

What the numbers say

Union held more of the ball and generated somewhat more danger overall, though the gap was not enormous.

As for the xG generated in the match, an in-house estimate based on shot location, Kansas City finished with 1.375 and Philadelphia Union with 0.836. In other words, the home side generated more expected danger despite ending up on the losing side, which confirms that Union's efficiency in the key minutes of the second half was decisive, outweighing the raw volume of play generated.

The result also runs contrary to much of what was projected before the match. In our preview we gave Sporting Kansas City just a 14% chance of victory, 20% for a draw and 66% for Philadelphia Union, with expected goals of 1.10 for the home side and 2.44 for the visitors. Union's status as favorites held up in the final result, but the path there was far more chaotic than any projection could have anticipated: nobody expected a 3-0 scoreline before the visitors even began to show signs of life.

In the Eastern Conference standings, Philadelphia Union came into this match in sixth place with 36 points from 26 games, the product of 10 wins, 6 draws and 10 losses. The comeback in Kansas City adds an important win in the battle to climb the standings in a tightly packed group, where several teams hover around similar point totals.

For Sporting Kansas City, there is the bitter feeling of a three-goal lead squandered in barely over an hour of play, a tough blow for a team that had done almost everything right in the opening 15 minutes. For Philadelphia Union, the picture is the opposite: a team capable of recovering from a 3-0 deficit and taking all three points, capped off by an own goal in a comeback built on pure clinical efficiency.
