Paris Saint-Germain to Open Ligue 1 Season on the Road After Parc des Princes Pitch Fails Inspection
A heat wave left the Parisian stadium's turf in poor condition, forcing the club to relocate its league opener at the last minute.
Starting a title defense on the road because of the pitch. It sounds strange, but that's exactly what happened to Paris Saint-Germain: their matchday one clash against Rennes, originally scheduled for this Sunday, had its venue changed at the last minute and will now be played at Rennes' home ground instead of the Parc des Princes.
The reason has nothing to do with construction work, sanctions or administrative tangles. It comes down to the weather. A heat wave hit France this summer and left the Parisian stadium's turf in such poor shape that the club, together with French football's competition committee, decided to move the match to a different venue. The announcement came Wednesday night, just days before the game.
PSG explained in a statement that the state of the pitch "did not allow the match to be played under satisfactory conditions, particularly with regard to the safety and physical wellbeing of the players." No sense risking ankles or knees on a surface that, by the champions' own admission, simply wasn't fit to host a top flight French football match.
A change agreed with the opponent
What stands out is how the logistics were worked out: rather than postpone the match or look for a neutral venue, PSG and Rennes agreed directly that the game would be played at the Breton club's ground. The Parisian side publicly thanked their opponents "for making the match possible," a gesture that spared the league schedule bigger headaches.
PSG also addressed its supporters, aware that many already had tickets and plans in place to attend the league opener at the Parc des Princes. "Paris Saint-Germain fully understands the inconvenience this change causes for its supporters and for everyone who had planned to attend this match at the Parc des Princes," the club said, adding that it "regrets this exceptional situation."

The good news, at least for Parisian season ticket holders, is that a fix is already underway. The club confirmed it has found a way to fully replace the Parc des Princes turf before its next home fixtures. The goal is to have everything ready for the next Ligue 1 home game, against Monaco, set for September 4.
In the meantime, the reigning French champions will have to begin their season away from their usual fortress, an unusual situation for a team that typically leans on its home crowd for big matches. It remains to be seen whether the change of scenery has any effect on a squad that arrives as the clear favorite to repeat as champions.
