PSG rallies late to beat Strasbourg 3-1 as Dembele nets a brace

Strasbourg took the lead against the league leaders and for nearly an hour dreamed of pulling off the upset. But PSG showed up late to flip the script, ultimately taking a 1-3 win at the Stade de la Meinau capped by a devastating closing stretch: three goals between the 76th and 92nd minutes.

Giovanni Reyna put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute with a left-footed strike from inside the box, set up by Gessime Yassine, and that lead held well into the second half. Strasbourg didn't just hang on, they created real danger, with shots from Oso, Conrad Harder and Gessime Yassine forcing Matvey Safonov into save after save.

The game turned in the 68th minute, when Pape Diop committed a handball penalty inside the box. VAR confirmed it a minute later, but Ousmane Dembele missed the spot kick, the ball drifting just wide of the left post. It looked like Strasbourg might escape, but that's not how it played out.

The Parisian response

In the 76th minute, off a corner kick, Illia Zabarnyi rose in the middle of the box to head home the equalizer with a right-footed finish, assisted by Dembele himself. Eight minutes later, Dembele made up for his missed penalty, putting PSG ahead 1-2 with a left-footed shot from the center of the box. By then Strasbourg had run out of gas and had no answer.

PSG had to see out the match with problems of its own: in the 86th minute, Nuno Mendes went off injured after the team had already used all of its substitutions, leaving PSG to finish with a man down. Even so, in stoppage time, Desire Doue sealed the rout in the 92nd minute with a right-footed finish from the center of the box, assisted by Ferran Torres, making it a final 1-3.

What the numbers say

Possession followed PSG's usual away-game script: they controlled the ball at 73 percent to Strasbourg's 27 percent, completing 675 passes to the hosts' 246. Still, Strasbourg held their own in total shots and clear-cut chances.

In terms of xG generated during the match, calculated after the fact based on shot location, PSG finished with 2.644 compared to Strasbourg's 1.363. Those numbers back up the final score, though they also confirm Strasbourg had real attacking threat for a good chunk of the game.

Pre-match projections had given the visitors a 60 percent chance of winning, against 18 percent for Strasbourg and 22 percent for a draw, with total expected goals of 3.37. The result ended up matching that forecast, though the path there included a scare the odds hadn't accounted for: the hosts led for a large part of the match and might have sealed the upset had Dembele converted his penalty.

What the result means in the standings

The win keeps Paris Saint-Germain atop the table with 14 points from 7 matches played, though they share that total with Monaco. Strasbourg, meanwhile, sit in 12th place with 7 points after 7 matches, with a goal difference of minus 3. The gap between the two sides in the standings is 7 points, a reflection of how heavily the second half ended up weighing on the final score, despite the resistance the hosts had shown for most of the match.
