PSG Demolishes Slovan Bratislava 6-1 in Champions League Rout

It took Paris Saint-Germain just sixteen minutes to seize control of the match, and by the half-hour mark the game was all but decided. The final score, 6-1 over SK Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes, turned into a Parisian celebration in the Champions League, with Ferran Torres and Ousmane Dembélé the stars of a night in which Slovan barely stayed on its feet through the first 45 minutes.

PSG came out with knives out. Dembélé gave an early warning two minutes in with a shot that was blocked, and another effort from Dro Fernández was pushed away by the opposing goalkeeper, but the opening goal arrived from a corner kick: in the 16th minute, Dembélé struck with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 1-0. Slovan Bratislava responded almost immediately: in the 57th minute, Suleiman Camara buried a shot into the top corner after a pass from Tigran Barseghyan to make it 5-1, the only goal the Slovaks would get on the night. PSG, with several substitutes already on the field, closed out the scoring in the 86th minute with a goal from Fabián Ruiz, also off a corner kick, for the final 6-1.

With the rout, PSG now boasts a goal difference of 5 after this opening matchday, while Slovan Bratislava sits at minus 5.

The numbers back up the dominance

PSG hovered near three quarters of possession and put up nearly four times as many shots as their opponent. Our estimate of xG generated in the match, calculated from the shot data, has PSG at 4.89 against just 0.79 for Slovan Bratislava: a gap that reflects fairly well what unfolded on the field, with Dembélé and Ferran Torres constantly popping up in dangerous areas.

What the preview said and what actually happened
