PSG ultras take Marseille travel ban to court ahead of Le Classique

The ban was already signed, sealed and delivered, but PSG's ultras have no intention of standing by quietly. The group Collectif Ultras Paris announced it will take legal action against the measure barring Paris fans from traveling to Marseille for this Sunday's Le Classique, the match pitting PSG against its historic rival in Ligue 1.

The decision to block the trip didn't come out of nowhere. Local authorities explained that the ban responds to the risk of violent clashes between the two fan bases, which is nothing new in France when it comes to matchups considered high risk. In fact, this kind of restriction has become almost standard practice for meetings between PSG and Marseille.

The ultras, however, see the measure as more than a simple security matter. According to their statement, they have already instructed their lawyer to file an emergency appeal with France's Council of State.

France's Interior Ministry, for its part, defended the ban, pointing to years of hostility between the two fan bases. The precedent that weighs heaviest is from February 2018, the last time fans of both clubs were allowed inside the same stadium: that day, in Paris, eight law enforcement officers were injured in the resulting violence.

A rivalry that refuses to cool

Le Classique carries a historical weight that goes well beyond the three points at stake. Tension between the two fan bases spiked in the 1990s, when the arrival of marquee players at both clubs turned the fixture into something bigger than a league match. Marseille, the only French club to have won the Champions League, back in 1993, has been pushed to the football sidelines since PSG came under Qatari ownership in 2011, but that hasn't drained an ounce of intensity from the rivalry.

The sporting context adds an extra layer of intrigue to this meeting: PSG arrive as defending champions, holding a two point lead over Marseille in the standings. Marseille, meanwhile, is coming off a difficult summer after being unable to bring in any reinforcements due to financial constraints.

Will the Paris ultras' appeal succeed? France's habit of restricting travel for these heated fixtures means the odds aren't in their favor. Even so, the legal battle is already underway, and everything suggests it will come down to the wire, with the match fast approaching.
