PSV strikes through Til to sink FC Porto in Champions League
A 56th-minute goal from Guus Til gives PSV the win at Estadio do Dragao and leaves FC Porto without a single point after three Champions League matchdays.

Guus Til found himself alone by the left post to tap the ball into the net in the 56th minute, and that goal was enough for PSV to take all three points from the Estadio do Dragao. The 0-1 result leaves FC Porto with no room for error in the Champions League and confirms that, in this competition, every detail is working against the Portuguese side.
The first half had been even, with more chances created than the scoreline might suggest. Perisic and Pietuszewski both tested the goalkeeper early without finding the target, and Esmir Bajraktarevic tried his luck from outside the box with no success. The closest call for PSV came in the 41st minute, when Filip Kostic smashed a left-footed shot off the left post after receiving the ball from the left side of the area. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Sergino Dest forced a save underneath the crossbar before both sides went into the break with the score still level.
The second half opened with a braver Porto side: Pablo Rosario and Samu Aghehowa both had early tries after the restart, but it was PSV that found the answer. In a sequence that lasted barely a couple of minutes, Bajraktarevic struck the right post, Sven Mijnans narrowly missed on a second attempt, and on the third try, in the 56th minute, the breakthrough finally came: a cross from Mijnans and a close-range finish from Til for the only goal of the afternoon.
Porto reacted with three almost immediate substitutions, Andre Silva, Borja Sainz and Hwang In-Beom all came on, in search of fresh attacking ideas, and did create chances: Andre Silva was denied underneath the bar in the 71st minute, Froholdt saw a follow-up effort from the same play blocked, and Alberto Costa forced a diving save that grazed the crossbar in the 77th. None of it went in. PSV, for its part, kept causing problems through Dennis Man and Sven Mijnans late on, and even had a shot clip the crossbar in stoppage time, with the referee having added five extra minutes.
What the numbers say
Possession clearly favored the visitors, and the match statistics reflect a dominance that is not entirely surprising given how the game unfolded:
| Statistic | FC Porto | PSV |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 40.4 | 59.6 |
| Shots | 14 | 18 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Big chances | 1 | 4 |
| Corners | 2 | 3 |
| Passes | 422 | 616 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 9 |
Our expected goals estimate, based on the shots taken in the match, puts FC Porto at 1.874 against 2.727 for PSV, a gap that backs up what was seen on the field: the visitors created more and better chances, and the final result is not far off from that split.
Before kickoff, our preview had tabbed FC Porto as the favorite, giving the home side a 51% chance of winning against 24% for PSV and 25% for a draw, with an expected goals split of 1.87 for the home team and 1.25 for the visitors. The result ran in the exact opposite direction of what was projected: the favorite did not win, the scoreline did not come close to what was expected, and PSV ended up comfortably controlling the game.
What the standings show
In the overall league phase standings, FC Porto remains without a single point after three matches played, while PSV has 4 points on a record of one win, one draw and one loss in the same three games. The gap between the two sides in the standings is 4 points, a distance that today's result only confirms. For Porto, the road ahead in the rest of the competition is starting to look difficult. For PSV, this road win comes at a moment when the team needed a three-point result to avoid falling further behind in the table.
