PSV and Shakhtar Donetsk Share the Points in a Scoreless Second Half

PSV went into halftime trailing at Philips Stadion, and in the span of barely two minutes, one in first-half stoppage time and another right at the start of the second half, everything flipped: in the end, it finished 1-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League league phase. A point that leaves both sides with identical records and a similar feeling: something more slipped away.

The match had moved back and forth without much real danger until, deep into first-half stoppage time, Gleiker Mendoza showed up. In the 45th minute, assisted by Isaque, the Shakhtar forward finished with his right foot from inside the box to make it 0-1 right before the break. It was a cold blow for PSV, who had spent much of those first 45 minutes stringing together scattered chances: Kodai Sano and Ivan Perisic tested the keeper early without success, and Sano fired a low shot that the opposing goalkeeper smothered at his near post.

But the home side didn't take long to respond. As soon as play resumed, in the 47th minute, Sergino Dest arrived from the center of the box to poke home the equalizer off an assist from Armando Obispo. An almost immediate emotional counterpunch to open the second half that restored parity on the scoreboard, and that's how it stayed until the final whistle.

An Even Second Half, No Further Goals

The second half had intensity but few clear-cut chances. PSV kept pressing through Ruben van Bommel, who tried his luck more than once from outside the box without finding the target, along with Filip Kostic and Lutsharel Geertruida also testing shots from distance. Shakhtar answered through Isaque, who forced a save at the near post, and Lassina Traore, who came off the bench and had a point-blank effort blocked. There were yellow cards along the way (Vinicius Tobias, Gleiker Mendoza, Pedro Henrique, Armando Obispo, Valerii Bondar, Ruben van Bommel, Sergino Dest and Dmytro Kryskiv) reflecting a physical contest, but neither side found the goal that would have broken the deadlock.

The numbers end up reflecting how even the matchup was: PSV controlled the ball a bit more and took more shots, but the conversion rate was nearly identical in shots on target. Our own xG estimate for the match confirms it: 0.47 for PSV and 0.47 for Shakhtar, a tie even in the danger created.

The result is a good distance from what we projected before kickoff: our preview gave PSV a 47% chance of winning, just 29% to Shakhtar and 24% for a draw, with expected goals pointing to a much more open match (2.02 for PSV and 1.60 for Shakhtar, a combined 3.61). None of that came to pass: the actual match was far tighter and ended up exactly in the outcome that looked least likely on paper according to those numbers.

Neither side could pull away on this matchday, and both remain in the lower half of the sprawling league phase table, waiting to see what the coming rounds bring as they look to build a sturdier record.
