Pumas Honors Hugo Sánchez on the 50th Anniversary of His Debut

The Olímpico Universitario gave a standing ovation to the legendary forward before the match against Tigres, the same opponent he faced in his debut half a century ago.

Pumas Honors Hugo Sánchez on the 50th Anniversary of His Debut

Just past 7:00 p.m., an SUV pulled up near one of the tunnels at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Hugo Sánchez stepped out, accompanied by his wife and daughter, and within seconds he was surrounded by fans and media eager for a close look. This was no ordinary visit: Pumas had prepared a tribute to mark the 50th anniversary of his professional debut, which fell on Friday, October 23.

The setting could not have been more fitting. The tribute took place before the match against Tigres, the very same opponent a teenage Hugo faced in his first División de Honor appearance half a century earlier. The university club's leadership, led by club president Luis Raúl González Pérez, presented him with a commemorative award just before kickoff, as fans greeted him with chants of his name, the kind of reception reserved for the institution's biggest legends.

Before heading into the locker room, Sánchez took a moment to speak with ESPN about what it meant to return to Ciudad Universitaria under these circumstances.

It's bittersweet. Fifty years sounds like nothing when you say it, but so much has happened, and I'm grateful to everyone. It's beautiful to leave a legacy, and I want to leave a strong one.Hugo Sánchez

A Lineup of Academy Players and the Anthem in His Honor

The ceremony followed its own ritual. Sánchez walked onto the field behind the first team squad to sing the Himno Universitario, and as he came through the tunnel he found a lineup of players from the club's various youth academy categories, the same system that produced him as a young auriazul prospect. Once on the field, he greeted the current squad and took in all four sides of the stadium as he sang the anthem alongside everyone else.

Once that part of the ceremony ended, he walked over to the bench area, where he received a trophy shaped like a puma. In the stands, near the cauldron, a banner bearing his name went up, and the players warmed up before the match wearing a special edition jersey featuring his iconic bicycle kick, the move that made him instantly recognizable on any field in the world.

Hugo Sánchez left the field to a standing ovation from the Pumas faithful, the same fans who, fifty years later, still recognize what he meant to the club. Half a century after that debut against Tigres, the scene played out almost like a mirror image: Pumas again, the same rival from Monterrey again, and his name chanted once more at the Olímpico.
