Racing holds on late to beat Estudiantes Río Cuarto 1-2

Racing Club raced out to a 2-0 lead in just 37 minutes, then had to grind out the rest of the way to walk away with all three points in Río Cuarto. Sebastián Romero's side won 1-2 on the road, held on through a tense final quarter hour, and picked up a win that couldn't have come at a better time given where it sits in the standings.

The match, part of Argentina's Primera División, started with an early blow for Estudiantes Río Cuarto: in the 9th minute, Tomás Conechny curled a left-footed finish into the top corner from the center of the box off a cross from Ulises Ortegoza. The home side tried to answer with a few forays forward, but before halftime came a second gut punch: in the 37th minute, Adrián Martínez doubled the lead with a close-range left-footed strike off a counterattack that caught the home defense out of position. The teams went into the break with Racing up 0-2.

A comeback that came too late

In the second half, Estudiantes Río Cuarto faded on the scoreboard but not in effort. The home side created clear chances through Alejandro Cabrera, who clipped the crossbar and then sent a couple of shots well over the bar from both inside and outside the box, while Racing did what it could to absorb the pressure. The comeback attempt didn't arrive until the 87th minute, when substitute Mauro Valiente headed home a corner delivered by Gabriel Alanís, finding the top left corner to make it 1-2. There were five minutes of stoppage time added, and Valiente himself had another header that drifted just wide, but the equalizer never came.

The shots on target tell much of the story: Racing saw less of the ball but was sharper in the final third, while Estudiantes generated plenty of chances without the finishing touch until it was too late.

Looking at the match's estimated xG (an in house measure calculated after the final whistle based on shot location), things were much closer than the scoreline suggests: 1.438 for the home side against 1.505 for the visitors. In other words, the result wasn't an exaggerated reflection of what each team produced, even if Racing proved more clinical when it mattered most.

The pre-match numbers had pointed clearly in one direction: our projection gave Racing Club a 57% chance of winning, against just 13% for Estudiantes Río Cuarto and 30% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.42 for the visitors and only 0.56 for the home side. The result ended up matching that forecast fairly closely: Racing won as expected, though the home side put up more of a fight than those numbers suggested, especially in the second half.

What it means in the standings

In Group B of the standings, both teams arrived with different needs. Racing Club moved up to 11 points through 11 matches played, with a record of 3 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses, and remains in the lower half of the table. Estudiantes Río Cuarto, meanwhile, stayed at 6 points after 11 matches (1 win, 3 draws and 7 losses), with a goal difference deep in the negatives that reflects the team's struggles so far this season. The gap between the two sides before this match stood at 5 points, and the home loss does nothing to close that distance.

For Racing, the win comes at a moment when it needed three points by any means necessary, even if it meant sweating until the final whistle. For Estudiantes Río Cuarto, the second half performance and Valiente's goal at least leave the impression that the team competed, even if the overall result still isn't going its way.
