River hosts Estudiantes de Río Cuarto with Monumental showdown doubling as relegation fight
Saturday at the Monumental, River looks to snap a rough stretch while the Leones need a win to avoid the drop to Primera Nacional.
After three weeks without a match, River returns to action against a rival that is anything but relaxed: Estudiantes de Río Cuarto needs something close to a miracle to avoid relegation to the Primera Nacional. The game is set for Saturday, October 10, at El Monumental, for matchday twelve of Zone B in the 2026 Torneo Clausura.
Kickoff time depends on where you're watching from: 9:30 p.m. in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, and 7:30 p.m. in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The broadcast will air on ESPN Premium in Argentina, while the rest of Latin America can catch it on Disney+.
A River side looking to find its footing again
Leonardo Ponzio's team arrives needing to put a recent slump behind it: River comes off a 2-1 loss to Huracán, a result that snapped a five-game unbeaten run in the tournament. The club also sat out the FIFA date before this one, so the match against Estudiantes de Río Cuarto marks a real return to competition. Still, minds are already turning to what's next, with another game on the calendar for Wednesday the 14th, this time against Sarmiento.
On the Núñez roster there are names that always draw attention: Gonzalo Montiel, Ángel Correa and Sebastián Driussi are expected to be the players who spark the offense, while the club awaits the full recovery of Thiago Almada, another option who could add attacking weight once he's fit.
The Leones, backs against the wall
On the other side, the situation is dire. Estudiantes de Río Cuarto has gone 10 games without a win, with three draws and seven losses, four of them in a row. The harshest reality: a loss on Saturday would confirm their relegation to the Primera Nacional. Rubén Forestello, the Cordoban side's head coach, knows there's more than three points at stake. To pull off the upset of the year, the names to watch are Alejandro Cabrera, Gabriel Alanís, Ibrahim Hesar and Tomás González.
Can a team in free fall stop a River side trying to get back on track? Recent history doesn't favor the Leones: the only previous meeting between the two this Clausura ended in a 2-0 win for River on the road, on March 22, 2026, with goals from Montiel and Maximiliano Salas. Now the setting changes, with El Monumental in play, and Estudiantes de Río Cuarto has no room for error.
