Racing unveils the yellow and black jersey that was blocked back in 1904

Some jerseys are launched to sell, and some are launched to tell a story. The one Racing just unveiled falls squarely into the second category. Yellow and black, carrying an anecdote more than a century old, the Academia's new third kit arrives right as the team navigates an uncomfortable stretch in the Torneo Clausura, though that didn't take the spotlight away from the launch.

The design isn't a stylistic whim. It revives a look the club tried to wear back in 1904, just a year after its founding. Up to that point, Racing had worn all white and was looking for a new identity through that yellow and black combination. The problem was that a Uruguayan club was already using those same colors, so the request was turned down. That's how the club ended up shifting to sky blue and salmon pink, the color pairing that has been the institution's trademark ever since, right up to today.

With that backstory in mind, the club decided to play with the idea of what never got to happen. The launch campaign rolled out under the concept "Nobody tells Racing no", a phrase that works almost like a delayed response to that rejection from the early twentieth century. The video accompanying the launch runs through milestones that once sounded flat out impossible for the club: becoming the first world champion, filling two stadiums on the same day, or stringing together seven straight titles.

A jersey that already made a comeback once

This isn't the first time yellow and black has resurfaced in Racing's history. The combination had a previous revival in 1973, when the squad featured names like Fillol, Scotta and Trossero, part of one of the most fondly remembered generations in the Academia's history. More recently, in 2019, Gabriel Arias wore a goalkeeper jersey that also paid tribute to that original design, though it never became the team's main or alternate jersey.

What stands out is that, beyond the nostalgia, the shirt works as a symbol: the project that couldn't happen in 1904 and that, more than a hundred years later, the club decided to pull out of the drawer and reclaim. It's a way of saying that Racing's identity doesn't begin and end with sky blue and salmon pink, but also has a yellow and black branch that waits its turn every so often to take the field.

It remains to be seen whether this third jersey will see real minutes in an official match or whether it will stay a collector's item for the fans. Either way, the launch succeeded in shining a light on a little known chapter of the club's origins, in the middle of a season where the soccer news hasn't always been kind.
