Racing and Boca meet in a clasico of contrasting moods for Clausura matchday six
La Academia is dragging a four-game winless streak, while the Xeneize arrive riding high after a rout in the Copa Sudamericana.
Racing comes in dragging its feet in the domestic tournament, though with a Copa Argentina final result it can be proud of. Boca, on the other hand, arrives full of confidence after a continental blowout, with its mind already on other things. That contrast in moods is the main seasoning of a clasico that always promises more than the standings suggest.
On Sunday, August 23, at Estadio Presidente Peron, La Academia hosts the Xeneize for matchday six of the 2026 Torneo Clausura. Kickoff is set for 9:30 p.m. in Argentina and Uruguay (7:30 p.m. in Chile and 6:30 p.m. in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), with coverage on ESPN Premium for Argentine audiences and Disney+ for the rest of Latin America.
How the two teams arrive
Nothing is going right for Racing in the domestic league right now. Juan Pablo Vojvoda's side has gone four straight games without a win in the Clausura, with one draw and three consecutive losses, including a 1-0 home defeat to Banfield. The one bright spot came elsewhere: La Academia knocked out Belgrano de Cordoba in the Copa Argentina and advanced to the tournament's final eight. That's no small feat, but it doesn't make up for the league slump.
Boca finds itself in a very different place, though with some nuance. In the Copa Sudamericana there were no doubts: it routed Deportivo Recoleta 4-0 in the second leg to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals. Domestically, though, Rodolfo Arruabarrena's team comes off a 1-1 draw with Platense, a result that stretched its unbeaten run to four games (one win, three draws). Good vibes in continental play, somewhat lukewarm in the league.
Names to watch
At Racing, all eyes are on the return of Adrian Martinez, along with the form shown lately by Alejandro Tello, Gaston Lodico, Ezequiel Cannavo and Ulises Ortegoza. On Boca's side, the excitement centers on young talents Tomas Aranda and Leonel Flores, without overlooking the experience that Leandro Paredes and Santiago Ascacibar bring in midfield.
The recent head to head between the two doesn't offer much to go on: the last time they met, on February 20, 2026 at La Bombonera, the game ended in a quiet 0-0. Will the clasico repeat that caution, or will one of the two sides find a way to break the deadlock? The current standings, combined with the separate momentum each team carries from other competitions, point to a tight match, even though the two clubs are heading in noticeably different directions right now.
