Rafael Leão leaves AC Milan, signs with Galatasaray for 38 million euros
The Portuguese winger has agreed to a four-year deal worth 10 million euros a season.
Rafael Leão has a new home, and it's in a league that has become a landing spot for big names in recent years: the Turkish Super Lig. The Portuguese winger left AC Milan to sign with Galatasaray in a deal worth 38 million euros (about $44 million). Few would have guessed three years ago, when he lifted the Scudetto as Serie A's best player, that his path would eventually lead to Istanbul.
The Turkish club confirmed the signing along with the contract terms: a four-year deal worth a net salary of 10 million euros per season (roughly $11.6 million). Those numbers make clear just how much Galatasaray was willing to spend to land one of the most talented wingers Portuguese soccer has produced in the last decade.
There's also a clause worth noting: Galatasaray confirmed that 20 percent of the profits from any future sale of the player will go back to Milan. It's a common arrangement in deals like this one, allowing the Italian club to keep benefiting from Leão's performance even after letting him go.
So why is Milan parting ways with a player who, just over three years ago, was the league's MVP? The answer lies in his recent form. Leão, 27, was key to Milan's 2021-22 Serie A title run, but has since dealt with injuries and inconsistency that kept him from reaching that level again on a regular basis. Milan, in need of revenue and looking to refresh its roster, saw this sale as a reasonable way forward.
Still, when Leão is on form, he remains capable of deciding matches at the highest level. Just look at his performance for the Portuguese national team at the last World Cup: he delivered the cross that led to Gonçalo Ramos's decisive header in stoppage time of a tense match that Portugal won 2-1 over Croatia to advance to the round of 16. That assist, with the clock working against them, sums up pretty well what he can bring when he finds consistency.
Now comes a different kind of challenge. Galatasaray needed a marquee name to bolster its attack and compete both in the Turkish league and in Europe, and it made a big bet on a player who still has room to reinvent himself away from the pressure of Milan. It remains to be seen whether the change of scenery brings back the consistency that was so often demanded of him in Italy.
