Raphinha Scores From the Spot Against Elche, Celebrates Like Spider-Man at His Son's Request

Barcelona's captain opened the scoring from twelve yards and later explained the gesture was a gift for his son, who adores the superhero.

Raphinha Scores From the Spot Against Elche, Celebrates Like Spider-Man at His Son's Request

A penalty, a web-slinging gesture and a family story behind it all. That's what Raphinha delivered in Barcelona's win over Elche, a match the Brazilian settled from the penalty spot before explaining afterward with an anecdote that melted plenty of hearts.

The Blaugrana captain opened the scoring from the spot and, instead of celebrating as he usually does, raised his hands as if shooting webs, imitating Spider-Man. The scene set off immediate chatter on social media, since that celebration is the trademark of Julian Alvarez, the forward who has been persistently linked with a move to bolster Barca's attack in recent weeks. A nod to the Argentine? Not at all, according to Raphinha himself.

The Brazilian was quick to clear up the real origin of the celebration as soon as the match ended. It had nothing to do with transfers or crossed messages: it was all about his son.

It was for my son, he asked me to do it. He loves Spider-Man right now and asked me to do that celebration if I scored a goal. The goal was for him.Raphinha

Beyond the anecdote, the result allowed Barcelona to keep piling up road wins, something that isn't always easy on pitches like Elche's, a side that tends to handle the ball well and give trouble to teams arriving with the burden of dictating play. Raphinha was clear about why his team found things more comfortable than expected.

"Whether a match is easy or hard depends on us. If we start the game at the highest level from the first minute, it gets easier. This is a tough ground and Elche is a team that likes to have the ball, but I think we did really well from the start of the match and that made things easier for us," the forward explained in comments to Movistar.

The captain also downplayed how one-sided the final score looked, making clear the match was closer than the result suggested. "When one team has more of the ball than the other, it's harder for the other team. This has to do with the heat too. Elche is a good team and the result doesn't reflect much of what the match actually was," he noted.

Does Barca Need a No. 9?

With Barcelona once again working with a collective attack, one in which Raphinha shifts between winger and focal point up front, the question of whether the club needs to add a pure center forward was inevitable. The Brazilian preferred to steer clear of matters outside his lane.

"I'll leave that to the president, to Deco or the coach. Whatever the coach asks of us, we do it with a lot of determination, whether that's playing as a nine, a striker or a winger. I'm comfortable on the field," he responded, leaving the door open to whatever decision the sporting management makes without committing to a personal stance.
