Raphinha Exits with Thigh Discomfort After Scoring Penalty for Brazil, Setting Off Alarm Bells at Barca
The forward converted a penalty against Australia but did not return after halftime, right as he's enjoying his best stretch as Barcelona's "9."

The scare came just when everything seemed to be going perfectly. Raphinha scored from the penalty spot right before halftime, celebrated like a player in the best run of his career, and then never came back out. He stayed in the locker room with discomfort in his right thigh, and alarm bells are already ringing in Barcelona.
The match was a friendly between Brazil and Australia in Brisbane, the second meeting between the two national teams in just four days (the first had ended 1-1 on Friday in Townsville). The Seleção wound up winning 4-2, but the story of the match wasn't the result, it was the early exit of their in-form man.
Things started well for Brazil, who went ahead through an early goal from Vanderson. Australia answered back with goals from Alessandro Circati and Connor Metcalfe to level it at 2-2. Right before the break, in the 45th minute, Raphinha converted a penalty to put Brazil back in front. It turned out to be his last touch of the match: for the second half, coach Carlo Ancelotti sent Endrick, of Real Madrid, to warm up in his place.
In the second half, Brazil sealed the win with goals from Bruno Guimarães and Vinícius Júnior, the latter also from the penalty spot, to close out the final 4-2 scoreline.
What's known about the injury
The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed the substitution was due to "discomfort in the right thigh," though it did not specify whether the issue involves the hamstring, quadriceps, adductors, or some other area. It's precisely that lack of detail that has Barcelona on edge, since there's no way to know for now how serious it might be.
And there's plenty of reason for caution. Raphinha missed 25 matches between club and country during the 2025-26 season because of various hamstring issues. The fact that this new warning sign comes in the same thigh is not a good omen, though there's no confirmation yet that it's the same problem.
What stands out is that all of this is happening during the best stretch of the Brazilian's career. At 29 years old, and following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres from Barca this summer, Hansi Flick decided to reinvent him as the team's "9." The experiment couldn't have gone better: he strung together two straight hat tricks in LaLiga before this international break, racking up 14 goals in just eight matches this season.
Now it's a waiting game. Brazil still has one more fixture on this FIFA date, against India in Kolkata on Saturday, though the question is no longer whether Raphinha will play in that match, but how long he might be sidelined and whether Barca will need to rethink its attack right when the Brazilian forward had become the key piece of Flick's team.
