Real Madrid keeping close tabs on Jacobo Afonso, Sporting CP's 15-year-old midfielder
The Spanish giants have gathered highly positive reports on the Spanish-Portuguese midfielder, son of former Benfica player Nuno Afonso, as part of their push to stock La Fabrica with young talent.

Barely 15 years old, and Real Madrid is already taking notes on every match he plays. That is, more or less, the situation surrounding Jacobo Afonso, the Sporting CP academy midfielder who has made his way onto the club's scouting radar, according to sources consulted by ESPN.
This is not a passing interest. At Valdebebas, staff have been tracking his progress for some time, and according to those same sources, the internal reports on the youngster are highly positive. Afonso plays as an interior midfielder, a profile Real Madrid has always favored: arriving late into the box from deep positions, physical presence well beyond his years, and ball control that sets him apart from his peers.
His resume, young as he is, already includes some eye-catching details. He is a youth international for Spain and has been called up to the U-16 national team in its most recent camps. And here is the curious twist in his story: he was born in Salamanca but raised in Portugal, which gives him dual Spanish and Portuguese nationality. Soccer runs in the family too, since his father is Nuno Afonso, a former Portuguese professional who once wore the Benfica jersey.
A youth policy that never stops
It should come as no surprise to anyone who follows La Fabrica closely that Madrid has its eye on a 15-year-old. The club has spent recent months combing the youth market, both in Spain and abroad, and Afonso fits perfectly into that philosophy of snapping up young talent before it breaks out.
In fact, this is not an isolated case. In recent months Madrid already completed the signing of Jan Vila, the 14-year-old gem who came through Espanyol's academy, and continues to negotiate for JJ Gabriel, who turned 16 on October 6. These are pieces of the same plan: fill La Fabrica with names that, with luck, will eventually make the jump to the first team.
The academy, for what it's worth, is going through a sweet spot. The money brought in from last summer's sales, which topped 200 million euros, has given the club significant financial breathing room. Add to that the trophies: the Juvenil A side was crowned champion of the UEFA Youth League last season and then added the U-20 Intercontinental Cup in September. Given that backdrop, it's no surprise Madrid wants to keep strengthening its base.
Jacobo Afonso is, for now, one of the names most closely watched on that radar. Nothing is finalized, but the possibility of bringing him in over the coming months remains very much alive.
