Stoppage-Time VAR Penalty Leaves Sporting KC Hanging After 1-1 Draw With FC Dallas

Sporting Kansas City came back from an early Johansson goal thanks to Jansen Miller's strike, but VAR pointed to a 94th-minute penalty for FC Dallas that could still flip the result at Sporting Park.

Stoppage-Time VAR Penalty Leaves Sporting KC Hanging After 1-1 Draw With FC Dallas

Sporting Park watched Sporting Kansas City snatch a point off FC Dallas at the death, but the drama didn't end there. In the 94th minute, with the score already locked at 1-1, VAR pointed to a penalty for FC Dallas that leaves a bitter taste for the home side just when it looked like the points would be split with the draw already secured.

The script of the match started early. In the 18th minute, FC Dallas struck on a well-executed counterattack: Ran Binyamin set up the play and Herman Johansson finished with his right foot from inside the box, a low shot that found the net next to the goalkeeper's left post. The 0-1 fairly reflected what was happening on the field, with the visitors uncomfortable but effective on the break.

Sporting Kansas City, though, answered at just the right moment. With the clock showing 46 minutes, right at the end of the first half, the equalizer arrived: off a free kick, Owen Wolff whipped in a cross that Jansen Miller met with a header at close range from the left side, sending it straight into the top corner. It was a huge lift for the home side, who went into the break level after having trailed on the scoreboard.

A Back-and-Forth Second Half

The second half brought no more goals from open play, but there were chances at both ends. André Luiz was a constant threat for Sporting Kansas City, firing off several shots from inside and outside the box that didn't find the target, while Lalas Abubakar tried his luck with headers on more than one set piece for FC Dallas. The match turned physical, with several yellow cards handed out (including Abubakar, Bartlett, Ibeagha, Wolff, Davis, Urhoghide and Sarver) and constant fouls breaking up the rhythm.

With the score level and the clock ticking down, both sides made substitutions looking for an edge that never came. But in stoppage time, just when everything pointed to a split of the points, VAR stepped in: a penalty for FC Dallas in the 94th minute. The call came right after a couple of blocked shots inside the box, on a scrappy play that ended with the referee's decision marking the close of the match.

What the Numbers Say

Sporting Kansas City controlled the ball a bit more and created more clear chances on goal, but FC Dallas was sharper from corners and in overall shot volume.

As for the xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots, FC Dallas produced 1.934 expected goals against 1.091 for Sporting Kansas City, a gap that confirms the visitors had the more dangerous chances, even though the final score (not counting the penalty) ended up even.

The preview we published ahead of the match gave FC Dallas a 59% chance of winning, against 20% for Sporting Kansas City and 21% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.37 for the visitors and 1.37 for the home side. The result on the field, a draw with a late penalty call settling things after regulation time had expired, moved in a different direction than we projected, especially given the resistance Sporting Kansas City showed over the 90 minutes.

In the MLS Western Conference standings, FC Dallas sits second with 55 points from 33 games played, while Sporting Kansas City is 15th with 23 points from the same number of matches, a 32-point gap between the two that sums up the very different situations they brought into Sporting Park. The 94th-minute penalty remains the detail that could still change the 1-1 scoreline the 90 minutes ended with.
