Reus opens the scoring but Arriola rescues a draw as LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders FC split the points
LA Galaxy went ahead from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute, but Seattle Sounders FC found the equalizer through Arriola in the 80th.
Dignity Health Sports Park came within ten minutes of a home celebration, but instead ended in a 1-1 draw that left both sides wanting more. Marco Reus opened the scoring from the penalty spot before halftime, and Paul Arriola, just moments after coming on, equalized for Seattle Sounders FC in the 80th minute. Points shared in MLS.
The match opened with an early exchange of chances that hinted at what was to come: Dejan Joveljic missed a point-blank effort in the second minute, and Reus answered shortly after with a shot that sailed just over the bar. Between the 10th and 40th minutes, Seattle Sounders FC created several clear openings, with Albert Rusnak testing the keeper more than once and Jordan Morris heading a chance off target, but the LA Galaxy goalkeeper handled them without much trouble. The Galaxy also caused problems of their own, with Kyogo Furuhashi and Justin Haak forcing saves that were dealt with.
The first half was decided by a single moment: in the 41st minute, Hirving Lozano was fouled inside the box by Paul Rothrock, and the referee pointed to the spot. Two minutes later, Marco Reus converted with a low shot to the right side of the goal to make it 1-0 at the break.
Seattle Sounders FC's equalizer
The second half began with an immediate change for Seattle Sounders FC, with Sebastian Gomez coming on for Rothrock, while LA Galaxy continued to carry the play for long stretches, with Hirving Lozano and Marco Reus creating chances that never found the net. But the game shifted after a round of Seattle Sounders FC substitutions starting in the 78th minute, when Paul Arriola came on for the injured Dejan Joveljic. Arriola needed just two minutes to make his mark: in the 80th minute, he finished from close range, near the left post, off an assist from Jordan Morris, to make it a 1-1 final score.
The closing stretch had more intensity than clarity, with shots from Joao Klauss, Pablo Ruiz, Harbor Tarczynski-Miller and Calegari for the home side, and from Peter Kingston and Hassani Dotson for the visitors, but none found the net. The referee added seven minutes of stoppage time, but the scoreline held.
What the numbers say
The stats reflect an even match, with Seattle Sounders FC slightly sharper in the final third despite seeing less of the ball:
| Stat | LA Galaxy | Seattle Sounders FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 48.4 | 51.6 |
| Shots | 18 | 17 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 8 |
| Corners | 5 | 3 |
| Passes | 409 | 442 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 15 |
The shots-on-target count, 8 to 5, helps explain why Seattle Sounders FC ended up finding the equalizer despite having less possession. According to our estimate of xG generated in the match (calculated after the fact based on shot locations), LA Galaxy posted 1.784 expected goals to Seattle Sounders FC's 1.764: two teams practically even in terms of danger created, something the final score ended up reflecting faithfully.
Beforehand, our projection gave LA Galaxy a 33% chance of winning, 29% for a draw and 38% for Seattle Sounders FC, with a combined expected goals total of 2.76. The final result, a draw with two goals on the board, lines up fairly well with that forecast: there was no surprise in the outcome, though there was in the way it unfolded, with LA Galaxy going ahead first and giving up the lead just as the match entered its final stretch.
In the Western Conference standings, the result leaves the two sides separated by just 2 points: LA Galaxy sit in 10th place with 30 points (7 wins, 9 draws, 10 losses in 26 matches), while Seattle Sounders FC sit 13th with 28 points (7 wins, 7 draws, 9 losses in 23 matches). Neither team got the win it needed to climb the table, and the draw leaves the narrow gap between them unchanged.
