Sounders rout Minnesota United 3-1 as early double and late Arriola strike seal it

Jordan Morris needed just 15 minutes to open the scoring at Lumen Field, and from there the Seattle Sounders FC never let go of the game: they routed Minnesota United FC 3-1 in an MLS clash that ended up far more one sided than the preview had suggested.

The first half was a home team monologue. Morris fired home with his right foot from inside the box after a through ball from Albert Rusnák to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute, and just 19 minutes later, in the 34th, Hassani Dotson doubled the lead with a close range finish off a corner kick for 2-0. Seattle went into halftime with that scoreline and a level of dominance the match stats would go on to confirm.

The second half opened with Minnesota looking for a response, and they found one quickly: in the 56th minute, Anthony Markanich popped up in the middle of the box to score with his left foot off a cross from Bongokuhle Hlongwane on a counterattack, making it 2-1 and reopening a game that had looked all but settled. But the Sounders answered right back: in the 82nd minute, Paul Arriola finished into the top right corner, again assisted by Rusnák and again on a counterattack, to make it 3-1 and put the game away.

Dominance the numbers back up

Seattle held the ball more (55.1% possession to 44.9%) and, above all, was far sharper in front of goal: the Sounders put 8 shots on target compared to just 2 for Minnesota, along with three big chances to the visitors' one.

The xG estimated from the match's shots backs up that gap too: 2.93 for the Sounders against 1.48 for Minnesota, a difference that confirms the home side didn't just see more of the ball, it turned that possession into real danger far more often.

What the preview said versus what happened on the field

Before kickoff, our projection gave Seattle Sounders FC a 48% chance to win, against 26% for a draw and 26% for a Minnesota win, with expected goals of 1.74 for the home side and 1.22 for the visitors (2.96 combined). The result ended up more decisive than that forecast suggested: the final 3-1 scoreline comfortably topped that goal expectation, and the home favorite tag was borne out by a match Seattle controlled from start to finish, save for the window opened up by Markanich's goal.

The rout at Lumen Field, with Morris and Dotson putting the first half away and Arriola sealing it after Markanich's response, leaves the Sounders with a win that backs up what the game's numbers already hinted at: more possession, more shots on target and more clear cut chances than their rival in a match that ended up considerably more comfortable than the halftime score suggested once Minnesota had pulled one back.
