River eliminated in Sudamericana round of 16 by Independiente Santa Fe, another door to Libertadores closes
The Nunez club remains inconsistent in the Liga Profesional and loses one of its last chances to return to the top continental competition.
The international dream is over, at least through this route. River was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana by Independiente Santa Fe, and the blow stings twice over: it's not just a tournament exit, it also shuts one of the doors that remained open for a return to the Copa Libertadores.
Because the reality, right now, is an uncomfortable one for a club used to playing in the top continental competition every year. In the Liga Profesional, the Nunez side has been inconsistent, and that shows especially in this year's Torneo Clausura. The result: River sits 11th in the Annual Table, seven points behind Velez, who currently holds the last spot that grants direct qualification to the Libertadores.
Is it any comfort that it's "only" seven points? Not really, when you look at the rest of the equation. Between River and Velez there are no fewer than eight teams squeezed in between, and only ten matchdays remain before the count is settled. Reaching third place in the Annual Table, the spot awarded based on combined Apertura and Clausura standings, has become an uphill task.
And it's not the only door that has closed on River in recent weeks. River no longer has chances in the Sudamericana (eliminated by Santa Fe) or in the Copa Argentina, and it also lost the Apertura final to Belgrano. One path remains: winning the Torneo Clausura. But the outlook there isn't encouraging either.
A Clausura that starts from behind
To fight for the Clausura title, River first has to make it into the top eight of its group and advance through the playoffs. The problem is that right now it sits 14th out of 15 teams in Zone B, five points behind eighth place, the last position that keeps a team in the running.
With that outlook, the elimination against Santa Fe weighs more than it might seem at first glance. It wasn't just about being knocked out of an international cup where River had arrived hoping to add another continental title. It also meant losing an important shortcut toward the 2027 Libertadores, at a time when every bad result in the domestic championship becomes one more alarm for the fans.
The Liga Profesional rulebook shows no mercy: the Annual Table is built by adding together the Apertura and Clausura results, and in case of a tie on points it's decided first by goal difference, then by goals scored, and only as a last resort by Fair Play or a draw. River, right now, isn't debating those fine details: it's debating how to close a gap that keeps growing matchday after matchday, with the clock running and less and less room for error.
