River looks to snap its losing streak against unbeaten Argentinos at El Monumental
The Millonario arrives on a four-game league losing streak and is looking to turn things around against the only team that hasn't dropped a single point so far.
Four straight losses in the league and six total across all competitions. That's the situation River finds itself in heading into Sunday, riding a losing streak that's starting to sting and facing an urgent need to snap it against the team least likely to do it any favors: an Argentinos Juniors side that hasn't dropped a single point all tournament.
The "Millonario" hosts the "Bicho" at El Monumental for matchday five of Zone B in the 2026 Clausura Tournament, on Sunday, August 16. The match will air on ESPN Premium in Argentina and on Disney+ throughout the rest of Latin America, with kickoff times of 6:00 PM (Argentina and Uruguay), 5:00 PM (Chile) and 4:00 PM (Colombia, Peru and Ecuador).
River's current form is a real concern. The last defeat, a narrow loss to Tigre, showed the same pattern that's been repeating itself: a lack of offensive clarity and a style of play that isn't convincing anyone. Eduardo Coudet needs quick answers, and not just for the league campaign. Just three days after this matchup, on Wednesday, the team has to travel to face Santa Fe in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana, a match that had been postponed following the powerful earthquake that struck Colombia.
On the other side, it's nothing but good news at Argentinos. Nicolás Diez's team is, so far, the only one among Argentine soccer's 30 top-flight clubs to have won every single match it has played: four for four, with a perfect record and sitting atop its zone. The latest confirmation came with a 2-1 win over Racing, a result that also puts the club firmly in the hunt for the annual table, where it sits among the top three.
Names to watch
At River, all eyes are on the veteran leaders who should be spearheading the response: Nicolás Otamendi, Gonzalo Montiel and Ángel Correa are the ones tasked with trying to turn things around for a team that needs goals and needs points, in whatever order, but needs both right now.
Argentinos, meanwhile, arrives with all the confidence that comes with an unbeaten record, backed by players who have been key to that run: Alan Lescano, Tomás Molina and Hernán López Muñoz are the standout pieces in Nicolás Diez's system.
The recent head-to-head history also favors the "Bicho." The last meeting came with Argentinos as the home side, on February 12 of this year, when they won by a narrow margin thanks to a goal from López Muñoz. Now the home advantage shifts, and River needs to reverse that trend on its own turf.
The contrast between the two squads is hard to ignore: one is trying to stop the bleeding, the other wants to extend a perfect run that already has it in the thick of the title race. El Monumental will be the stage to see whether River can find itself again, right against the team playing the best soccer in Argentina right now.
