River blows two-goal lead, settles for bittersweet draw with Velez at the Monumental

River Plate went up 2-0 at the Mas Monumental and ended up settling for a bittersweet 2-2 draw against Velez Sarsfield, in an Argentina Primera Division match the home side had practically wrapped up before halftime, only to watch it slip away in the second half.

The start was everything River could have asked for. In the 10th minute, Angel Correa finished with his right foot from the center of the box, low and close to the post, after a counterattack put together by Lucas Martinez Quarta. The home side controlled the ball (it would finish with 56.6 percent possession) and just before the break came the second goal: an own goal by Thiago Silvero in the 42nd minute made it 2-0 and seemed to leave the result all but settled heading into halftime.

But Velez came out of the locker room a different team. The halftime substitutions, including the introduction of Diego Valdes, changed the game: in the 60th minute, Valdes himself struck with his left foot from the center of the box, assisted by Matias Pellegrini, to make it 2-1. Velez had already given a warning with a shot from Simon Escobar that hit the post, and the goal confirmed the visitors had a real case to make in the match. The equalizer came in the 78th minute: Manuel Lanzini headed home a cross from Elias Gomez from the center of the box to make it a final 2-2. There were no further goals despite five minutes of stoppage time and attempts from Lautaro Pereyra, who could not trouble the Velez goal late on.

The numbers behind the match

River had more of the ball and generated more shot volume, but Velez was more efficient when it mattered. The big chances favored the visiting side, who also earned more corners.

The xG calculated after the fact using the match's shots also gives a slight edge to Velez: 1.101 versus 0.842 for River. This is our own estimate based on shot location, not a prediction, but it lines up with the feel of the second half: the visiting side created enough danger to erase most of the deficit that remained on the scoreboard after the first 45 minutes.

What the preview said

Before kickoff, our projection gave River Plate a 43% chance of winning, 34% for a draw and 23% for Velez, with expected goals of 1.14 for the home side and 0.78 for the visitors. The final result ended up being exactly the draw, the second most likely outcome according to that forecast, though the path to get there (a blown two-goal lead) was not the most expected one.

What the result means

In Group A, Velez Sarsfield came into this match in second place with 12 points from 6 games played, unbeaten to that point, and adds another point that keeps that record intact. River, for its part, is left with the feeling of having let slip a two-goal lead it had built with composure, between an individual finish from Correa and a marking error from Velez that ended in an own goal. The second half, with the introduction of Valdes and the goal from Lanzini, showed a visiting side that refused to give in despite the unfavorable scoreline and walked away with a point that, in light of the second-half numbers, was no fluke.
